My TV aerial should be directed to Limavady and I don't appear to be able to get the various HD channels 101-105. We are located in Portballintrae, so on edge of signal.
Have retuned the TV a number of times without success.
Is this expected, or should I investigate further.

It's not quite as simple as being "on the edge of signal" - there are areas further afield that are predicted to and will get good reception. This is more to do with the terrain and general lie of the land in your locale which is why there is a Relay transmitter at Bushmills which transmits the 3 PSB multiplexes (Freeview Light).
There are parts of your area that will get good signals for the 3 PSB multiplexes from Limavady and some parts may receive the COM multiplexes but with variable to poor reception.
We need a full postcode to look at predicted reception in your particular locale. But there is no general reason why you shouldn't get the BBCB HD/PSB3 multiplex equally as well as the BBCA/PSB1 or D3&4/PSB2 multiplexes.
If your aerial is pointi9ng at Limavady it should be pointing roughly at a bearing of 245 degrees, that's 25 degrees S of due W (almost WSW) with the rods (or squashed Xs) horizontal.
Try a manual tune for UHF channel C47 which is the one for PSB3 from Limavady.
You'd probably be predicted to get good reception of the 3 PSB multiplexes from Bushmills but we'd need that full postcode to confirm. Whilst to receive it, technically the aerial should point at it - bearing 128 degrees - fractionally E of SE, with the rods vertical, however aerials have "side-lobes" and sometimes receive signals from the side even with the wrong polarisation if they are strong enough. It might be worth you trying a manual tune of UHF 37 for PSB3 from it, just to see if you get anything.

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply from a few weeks ago. I finally had a chance to go up into the attic to try a few things out! I finally have reception on all muxes (with a small caveat) and it turned out to be a combination of several different issues.
I found that when I connected just my upstairs TV directly to the aerial, I got *all* channels in! This didn't happen a few months back but I had a weaker aerial up at that point, so hadn't initially thought of trying that again. I next found out, through trial and error, that the new TV distribution box I bought was faulty. I got this exchanged and initially, still very bad channel breakup on all apart from the Irish muxes. In the meantime, I had also bought a 700MHz "5G"-filter from Screwfix, so I thought .. let's give this a shot to see if it makes any difference. I plug it into the aerial input of the distribution box .. and everything came in again! So, in the end, it looks like it was a combination of the faulty box and being (apparently) too near a 700MHz mast (many of which are being used for 4G at the moment) that was preventing me get a stable picture .. and transmitter works in the middle of it all, didn't help!
I now have the muxes on both the upstairs and downstairs TV, including the HD channels on ch 47. The caveat? The mux with "Pop" (on ch 46) comes and goes as it is substantially weaker than any of the others. Overall, that's not a big deal as the kids can watch it on satellite downstairs and in the morning times, if they're upstairs, it works. I'm delighted to finally get Channel 4 HD in at last (without having to resort to non-Freesat channel mode on a separate satellite box).
Thank you for all of your tips and ideas to try out! TBH if it wasn't for your projected coverage maps and channel listings, I'd probably have given up a long time ago as not being viable.

The BBC did report a fault at the transmitter, but you should now have signals back.
From 8:39am to 9:54am on 30th Dec 2023 Off the air due to a fault.
Hope you did not retune when you had no signal. It doesn't matter if it's due to transmitter faults, engineering, weather conditions or your own aerial system - it's never recommend if you'd been tuned correctly,.
You can't tune to signals that aren't there and the net effect is often just to clear the correct tuning, so you receive nothing until you are correctly tuned again.
