The symbol shows the location of the Mendip (Somerset, England) transmitter which serves 720,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Mendip (Somerset, England) mast?

Charles Stuart: The "curves" for the various aerial groups are listed on Aerial group performance | Rigger's zone | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice

Basically C/D is -30dB for C33, which is - in a nutshell - "signal blocked".

Charles Stuart:
Try doing a search for "Bristol Aerials", you will find there are quite a number of aerial retailers and installers in and around the Bristol area. many also sell other aerial related items and satellite equipment.

Remember, don't let them talk you into a 'digital aerial' as ALL UHF aerials are perfectly capable of receiving analogue and 'digital' signals. Just make sure you buy a good quality log periodic - it will last you well and be suitable for any future changes that may occur.

I am near Bristol, I offer free estimates and certainly won't try and sell a digital aerial!

Here is an odd one, just installed a new aerial system on a house to replace a number of old c/d aerials feeding 4 rooms with a single w/b aerial via a 4 way amp. The location is north of Mendip so the local channel on 51 has a good signal level. All is well if each TV is fed straight from the aerial, but when you add the amp to feed each room you get "No Signal" on he local channel 51. All other channels are OK.

It is possible, and worth checking, that the gain of the 4-way distribution amplifier is giving too much signal at each TV set! Worth using a decent signal strength meter at the output from the aerial and then at each output of the dist. amp. Many digital tuners are not able to handle a strong signal so incorrectly report 'no signal' (they do that because the signal is too strong to be decoded so to the software it appears that there is no signal available, which is not the case). The fact that each set works normally with the direct input from the aerial but not with the amplified signal strongly suggests that may well be the case.

MikeP, Thanks for that but it seems very strange that the high power channels work OK it's the low power local channel on 51 that gives the problem. Looking at the list of channels from Mendip the local channel looks as if it uses a different transmittion system to the others, I wonder if this is used so those outside the "local" area can't use amps to get it. Somehow the amp blocks the signal, perhaps for copywrite for local advertising? No good if you are trying to use a distribution amp!

Iain Davies: In addition to that said by MikeP but still relating to, although nothing is seen on C51 it does not necessarily indicate that zero signal exists, and so you should try a test by going into your TV (or boxes) tuning menu / manual tune then entering C51 into the box but "not" followed by pressing search or scan, as this procedure on most devices will result in the tuner acting like a form of signal meter free of threshold limits, albeit that overload conditions can affect this test.

This procedure should be tried both with, and without, the distribution amplifier connected in line, if the signal still vanishes with the amp in-line then try the same test on Mendips COM6 C52 and see what the result is.

Of course, another way of testing is to insert one of these cheap (around £4.00) variable attenuators in-line with the amplifiers aerial input socket, then check to see if C51 appears whilst you adjust the level of attenuation.

Jb38, thanks for that yes it shows there is full signal strength but no signal quality. As I said all other channels are ok, it just affects CH51.

I've just rescanned my living room TV which has a DVB T2 tuner and was surprised to find what I presume is Com7 on Chennel 33 - All the new BBC HD channels, plus Al Jazeera HD etc on air - TV now appropriated by son to watch the footy, but I will check again later and confirm.
