Thanks for the replies jb38 and Charles. I have tried to tune ch 33 manually and there is no signal on my Humax HD PVR. The reason I say needing a wideband aerial is a pain is because it is on the end of a long pole on a very high chimney! I have reached it in the past, but I really don't fancy it now, and it isn't worth paying an aerial installer just to get BBC Four HD.

Jon: If you have carried out this test exactly as described, i.e: entering Ch33 but "not" followed by scanning it and no traces of a signal appeared on the strength / quality bars, then this does not look promising as far as the reception of this channel is concerned, because this type of test uses the tuner as a "poor man's" form of active signal meter free of threshold cut off levels, likewise will reveal signals down to a level well "under" that required to resolve a picture, and if any traces of a signal were evident then changing the aerial would have increased this level to one that would resolve a picture, although "maybe" with the aid of a booster.
As a matter of interest, what signal level readings do you get using the same type of test on C58?, the normal PSB3 HD service.

What has happened to the signal level of local MUX on ch51? Until a week ago it was giving 90% signal strength and 90% signal quality, but now it's down to 50% signal strength and 30% signal quality.

Ian:
I get all my Freeview services from Mendip and they are all still at the same strength/quality as they were a month ago!
To help us to help you we really need a post code or that of a nearby shop so we can check both the transmission path and local terrain - which can affect your reception.

MikeP. When the local tv MUX started from Mendip and CH33 for the extra HD channels, living in Weston I installed a high gain W/B aerial outside so I could get all channels from Mendip. Replacing the group C/D aerials we needed before. The new instillation gave full signal strength/ signal quality on all channels, and as I said very slightly lower strengths on channel 51 which I was not surprised about not being in the direct beam for the local MUX. The drop is so bad that two other tvs with ordinary W/B aerials gives no signal level at all.

paul edwards: Maybe you have a Group C/D aerial which works best on the higher channels. Or do you have a second aerial on a Welsh transmitter? Aerials, TV Aerial and Digital Aerial

Hi jb38, yes, I did do the test correctly on ch33, and it showed nothing at all. I also tried ch58, and after manually selecting DVB-T2 it showed 54% strength and 100% quality. I rechecked ch33, made sure I had selected DVB-T2, and it definitely shows nothing. I think I need a wideband aerial.
Thanks, Jon
