The symbol shows the location of the Mendip (Somerset, England) transmitter which serves 720,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Mendip (Somerset, England) mast?

DENNIS MARRABLE: Just to add, if the analogue channel is changed then obviously each TV on the system will require re-tuning to pick the new channel up, this obviously done whilst the TV's involved are set on "analogue".

On 3rd January the picture on Channel 11 started to break up,by the 5th all I was getting was no signal.I retuned and lost at least 10 channels on my main set.On two other almost new sets I can only get channels 1-5, all the others are no signal.I had no problems since the diital switchover and a new aerial 6 years ago.Advice please. My next door neighbour has the same problem.

Mrs P.Baigent: The likely answer (particularly as your neighbour is experiencing the same thing) is that the signal level at your location has dropped a bit, and that the level of the signal going into your TV is now just below that needed for the picture to show.

Retuning may only exacerbate the problem if the TV has the correct frequencies for the transmitter in question. It won't fix the problem (unless, perhaps, it is tuned to the wrong transmitter). You should refrain from retuning in such circumstances.

You need to retune on 28th March due to a change in frequency of some of the services. There is also a similar retune event coming up some time next year.

The commercial channels, including Pick TV are currently on low power from Mendip and will be so until 28th March.

To get the missing channels back, I suggest that you manually tune. Having got them back on your TV, do not retune, even if it starts to break-up or give "no signal". At such times, you might go to the signal strength screen and see that there is a weak signal there, but not enough to produce a picture.

Similarly, if you manually tune you might find that the signal is there but too weak to produce a picture. You will have to try again at a different time.

For a full list of Freeview channels, see here:

DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex

This list shows which services are carried on which multiplexes. A multiplex is a group or basket of programme channels that are broadcast as one signal on a single frequency. For example, Pick TV and Dave are on the same multiplex (COM5: ArqA). If you haven't got Pick TV, then the same will be so of Dave (and other channels in that multiplex). Conversely, if you have one, you should have them all (in the same multiplex).

What you need to do is identify the multiplexes that you are missing and attempt to manually tune to them to add the missing channels. The three low power multiplexes that you might be missing are:

COM3: SDN (ITV3 etc) manually tune to Ch48
COM4: ArqA (Pick TV etc) manually tune to Ch67 (to change to Ch56 on 28th March)
COM5: ArqB (Yesterday etc) manually tune to Ch52

Frome

I have a recent roof mounted aerial pointed at mendip by the installer and have been receiving a good reception of all channels for several years. In the last few weeks the reception has switched to the local Frome town Repeater with the result I now have less channels. The Panasonic Viera TV and DVD Recorder/Player/DAB tuner do not have a manual retune option, auto retune only which just gives me the Repeater, can you advise how I can tune into Mendip again?
thank you

David: The designers of these things need locking in a room with a 1,000 of them and told to tune them using real-world signals such as is presented at your location!

Fortunately, Frome uses low channel numbers and Mendip high ones and this means that a workaround is to start the automatic tuning scan with the aerial unplugged and then plug it in at 50%.

My post code is GL17 0NP, I recieve all channels but BBC is very unstable. I know that I am at the edge of the reception area but central doesn't give the appropriate news coverage. Is the BBC signal strength less than other channels?

andrew nash: The BBC Reception website says that there are no problems with Mendip (its BBC services at least that is).

BBC (Ch61), ITV1, C4 etc (Ch54) HD services (CH58), SDN: ITV3 etc (Ch48) are all at their final full power of 100kW.

Arq A: Pick TV etc (Ch67) is at 26kW until 28th March when it will move to Ch56 on its final power of 100kW.

Arq B: Yesterday etc (Ch52) is at 25.7kW until 28th March when it will go up to its final full power of 100kW.

Digital UK says that there is no work scheduled at Mendip. (Ch48 ar)
