Intermittent problems with channels dropping out and sometimes reappearing. At the moment (Fri 8/1/2021 21:00) channel five has disappeared but channel five+1 is OK. GU10 postcode which links to the Guildford transmitter (the only one available in my location). All channels OK on Wed 6/1/2021. Retuned a number of times but with no success.

Mr Ian Martin:

Without a full postcode we can't comment on your predicted reception. The GU10 area is a large area where better reception for many comes from the Crystal Palace transmitter, which is currently listed for Planned Engineering with "Possible weak signal".
Which way is your aerial pointing? And are the rods horizontal or vertical?
If it's horizontal and pointing ~ENE then it's pointing at Crystal Palace.
If its vertical and pointing a few degrees S of due E then it's Guildford.
You MAY still get signals from both whichever way the aerial is pointing!
Check in your TV's tuning section that you are tuned to the correct UHF channels.
For Crystal Palace it's C23, C26, C30, C25, C22, C28, C55 in the order PSBs1-3, COMs4-7
For Guildford it's C41, C44, C47, C37, C31, C32 in the same order but no COM7

roy rippingale:

Assuming you normally get your signals from the Guildford transmitter depending on your location (you may get several transmitters including Crystal Palace) then I can't find and reports of faults and the transmitter isn't currently listed for Planned Engineering. The Crystal Palace transmitter has had Planned Engineering.

Check in your TV's tuning section that you are correctly tuned to the UHF channels for Guildford - they are -
C41, C44, C47, C37, C31, C32 in the order PSBs 1-3, COMs4-6. Your aerial rods will be vertical for Guildford.
If on the other hand you normally get signals from Crystal Palace, your aerial rods will be horizontal pointing roughly ENE, so the channels will be C23, C26, C30, C25, C22, C28, C55, C35 in the same order but with the addition of COM7 and the Local Multiplex. How well/if you receive the last two will depend on location.

Over the last month in the GU10 area we have experienced complete loss or severe pixillation of independent TV signals on most days from the Guildford transmitter. It appears to be due to high pressure weather conditions. Why can't a technical fix be made to stop this. Strangely it doesn't affect BBC which are on a different channel frequency.

Nick Vandervell: The problem is that the weather conditions cause the signals to travel further so signals from more distant transmitters which wouldn't usually be receivable start to interfere with signals on the same frequency from the transmitter you are trying to receive. There is nothing that can be done to the transmitters to fix it (increasing the power output will not help as that just increases interference elsewhere) as the transmitters aren't at fault, it's down to the laws of physics.

Nick Vandervell:

To add to what StevensOnln1 has said, different people will be affected differently depending on their location and which way their aerials are pointing. This will affect the channels that they may get in such conditions. In any event these conditions don't always affect several frequencies and/or at the same time. Problem interference can last seconds, minutes, sometimes hours or longer. The important thing (unless you want to go dxing) is to NOT retune.

This might not be the correct forum for this question, but I'm curious to know why, although they appear in the channel list on my TV, quite a few channels listed in fact do not connect. These are mainly in the 250+ range such as On Demand 365. A message appears to the effect that I should connect my TV to the internat to receive them, this, despite the fact that my Sony Android TV is permanently connect by Wi-Fi. I receive TV from the Guildford transmitter.

Mike O'Sullivanm: The 250+ range is streaming channels, which don't appear to be compatible with your TV.
