Setup my aerial pointing at Bristol Kings Weston transmitter today. Could only get 21 channels and these broke up. ITV intermittent until I noticed the POLARISATION. Changed from horizonal to vertical, re-tuned and got 103 channels all good signals. So ensure Directors are vertical (fins are up and down).

JohnBatt: Yes, the polarization is a vital reception parameter.

robert stockwell: You are using the Mendip transmitter, and you will be getting a very strong signal from it.

If you have already checked the Freeview intermittent interference | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page, then you might have too strong a signal.

If you have, remove any boosters or amplifiers from your system, if the problem persists, you may need to fit an attenuator, they cost about a fiver.

Help. I've just moved to Westbury BS9 from Horfield BS7 and none of my freeview devices can pick up BBC channels! I have retuned because I guess my aerial in BS9 is now pointing at Kingsweston whereas in BS7 I guess it was pointing at Mendip.
Any ideas? New aerial? Aerial position needs tweaking?

NOTE: My wife regards this as a crisis of the highest order as we have no BBC as Wimbledon reaches its climax!

Steve: Kings Weston is the best transmitter for you. However, because you are so close, maybe the signal is too strong and is swamping your receiver. Remove any boosters etc that you may have in your system. If there are no boosters, etc, try a variable attenuator, or another approach is to try an indoor aerial to see if this will get a signal for you.

Hope this helps,
Adam.

Excellent website that I return to every time I need to retune a new TV, hard drive box or after MUX changes.

Richard Field has probably gone Sky now but maybe he had the same issue as me in that I not only get Kingsweston but also (weakly) Wenvoe. I solve the problem by manually selecting the MUXes one at a time. A professional friend advises to auto-tune but only plug in the aerial after the Wenvoe channels have been scanned.

Chiny: Yes! manual tuning is in many cases being the only way of getting over duplicate channel pick up problems from the more distant (and unwanted) stations.

The aerial out to a certain point before reinserting, can work very well in lots of cases dependant on the type of equipment the procedure is being used on, as it can be a very "hit and miss" situation for many due to lots of boxes not actually indicating the channel numbers during the scanning process, as all that's seen is a very vague looking progress percentage bar, failures when using the procedure on equipment with this type of indication being very frequently experienced, even with the more experienced types!

Hi, I've recently moved to with in approx. 1 mile of the kings weston transmitter and from what I can gather this is where my roof ariel is pointing towards (half of the others in my street also point this way, the other half point towards (I think) the Mendip transmitter) I have two ariel sockets and have tried two different televisions in each socket but cannot pick up any signal through either socket. Does any one have any ideas of what the problem might be? I don't want to call out an engineer if I can help it!

Thanks

Antony
