I have a new Humax PVR-9150T. I re-tuned on the 7th. All stations working fine. But reception on commercial channels this afternoon (17th) is rubbish. Reminiscent of Spain where any adverse weather causes signal to break up or fail altogether.
I was under the impression that switching completely to digital would improve the signal.
Why is this not the case?
I am in a WR5 postcode area.

Phil: WR5 indicates that you can be receiving from a few stations, this making it impossible to advise as reception possibilities cannot be carried out with any element of accuracy, as only a full post code can enable this to be done.

Digital does not automatically mean improved reception, this due to its "digital cliff" cut off effect whereby if the signal drops under a certain level it disappears, or if its continually hovering just above this level the picture can suffer from frequent spells of breaking up etc.

Digital scores over analogue because the picture quality remains constant over a wide range of reception strengths, unlike analogue where speckles start to develop as the signal gets weaker, albeit though that it doesn't cut off, this being its plus point!

Jb38:
Surely the signal can be strengthened though. I thought that was the idea once the analogue signal was switched off?
And why is the BBC signal so much stronger?
My aerial is digital and currently aimed at the Malvern transmitter. Would re-aligning it to Sutton Coldfield be a better bet?
My full postcode is WR5 3RA.

Phil: As switchover completes on Wednesday, when the final signal levels are introduced, you would be best advised to wait until then. Only BBCA is on full power at the moment (see the top of the page).

Phil: The usual reason for rain effecting Freeview reception is that water is leaking into the cables, but for other reasons see Single frequency interference | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

Some earlier models of the Humax PVR can function badly between the first and second stages of switchover, but - given a memory wipe - they will work perfectly from the second stage.

Freeview crashed and on retuning only 21 BBC channels are currently available. As I was watching the final few moments of a very good film this was very annoying!!

My recording of 'True Blood' on Channel 4 failed at 00:06 on the 21st, they didn't waste any time getting started on the process of switchover!

05:43 or earlier, C50 lives!
I think it said somewhere that it should all be over by 06:00, though a neighbour said he had heard on some form of news outlet to expect disruptions up to 'lunchtime'

Update. Getting BBC Channels on Sony now, but on Humax the signal is up and down. Can not manage to get channel 60, (sky news or hd channels on Sony HDTv. Nor non hd channels on the Humax. Very disppointed. Tv can pick up HD as l lived in the Ridge Hill area, when switchover happened there.
