I notice on the Digital UK site that we now have a third step for retuning Roweridge on the 18th April (to retain existing services). It looks to be mandatory but I'm not sure.
First I've heard of it..is it worth adding to this site Brian?

colin1951uk: It's for the commercial (COM) multiplexes which remain on their pre-switchover channels until 18th April. It is also not until the same date that the COMs' vertical components are introduced and at the same time the horizontally polarised signals are boosted.

I live in postcode RG25 2EE. Hannington is the recommended transmitter, but since we are in a valley Rowridge is the one used by most. We have 2 aerials on roof - one for each transmitter. These are combined to a single downlead (using a proper combiner) and it served well for analogue since Rowridge signal degrades under some weather or atmospheric conditions and Hannington is better for some Analogue channels, but we had both tuned on the TV's. With Digital, TV's seem to tune only to Rowridge (~C28-34). Do we really need to choose a transmitter, and unplug the other Rowridge aerial if we want to tune to Hannington?

David Wilson: It is a feature of most boxes that, during the scan, the first set of channels found for each mux (in your case Rowridge) will be stored. The only other channels to be stored would be any regional variant which is different to that already found. In the case of Hannington this could be ITV1 which would usually be placed in the 800s. Some receivers actually store all the channels in the mux containing a regional variant, others store only the actual channel(s) with different content. As the BBC channels and COM muxes are identical for Rowridge and Hannington the only way of storing the Hannington channels would be as you suggest, to unplug the Rowridge aerial before scanning, or do a manual tune for each of the Hannington frequencies after first clearing the channel list. Note that during the switchover period the 2k and 8k versions of the muxes are often seen as a variation, so for a short time you might see many extra channels being stored. This situation will revert to what you have seen previously when switchover is completed fully on 18th April 2012.

Dave Lindsay: So it's only mandatory for the COMs is it?
We get everything else running on the 21st March if I understand you correctly.

colin1951uk: I'm not sure of the use of the "mandatory" !
But yes, it only affects the COMs. There are other transmitters that go through such changes for the same reason.
It is because the PSBs are allocated channels previously used by three of the four analogue services, hence they are available for use at full power (equivalent to that of the analogue services). But the COMs often use three channels that have not previously been used at a particular station, hence they only become available once any other transmitters whose signals might be interfered with have vacated those channels.

This is on behalf of my elderly aunt who has no computer. She has had freeview for several years with no problem and is using a panasonic tv and humax digital recorder. For the last few months she has struggled to get itv1 and quite often the rest of mux2. On a recent visit I tried both auto and manual tuning of the tv and I can't get them either even though until the last few months she had no problem. With the humax the situation is better then the tv but often no itv1 or it is unwatchable. She is (and always has been) using a loft aerial and I have checked all the connections. Sometimes when she tunes it all comes back and then a few days later goes again. The opposite side of her road have no problem. Will this get better after retune?
