The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) mast?

Briantist: I am sure what you say is true - but wonder if work in advance of reconfiguration of antenna arrays in ahead of swithover could be having some effect on signal levels for some marginal locations - although ERP is maintained. Whether this happens or not; it should all sort itself out after the final switchover when Freeview gains from a massive increase in transmission power.

An aerial company makes this statement on their website with regard to Crystal Palace Transmitter: "Note, as work takes place on various digital transmitters (to prepare for the DSO) you may experience problems, e.g. with certain MUXES disappearing." So, the output power may not be reduced, but this issue of missing Muxes is recognised by a professional aerial company.

Graham: It's poppycock, the final commissioning testing of Crystal Palace happened ages ago.

Even Digital UK's report says "Crystal Palace main transmitter: ... TV (digital) working normally.

FJC Farrar: No, there is no effect as the current digital services are being provided by the same panels that have been there for the last decade.

The new equipment is being used for the current analogue channels and will just switch to digital, as it did on the recent commissioning tests, overnight.

Good evening Gents, my freeview box channels disappeared on saturday night,it read no signal,I thought the box had gone so went to argos sunday and bought a slightly more expensive settop box, have gone through the scan procedure over and over there has no channels I have checked all cables and aerials, have split the aerial with my daughters her is fine, have spent hours yesterday and today swapping cables and I still have no freeview on my samsung slim tv about 3 years old, could my tv need updating before the switch over or how can our reception from crystal palace transmitter work on one tv and not the other. any advise helpful, thanks Thea

Thea: As your query concerns a reception problem the you really have to indicate your location (pref: post code) to enable an assessment to be made on the signal level expected in your area.

However as far as one device being able to receive OK whereas the other doesn't is something quite commonly experienced by many, and with the usual reason for this being that because no two tuners have the same sensitivity its always the more sensitive types that's able to produce a picture on a weak signal whereas the less sensitive types cannot.

There is of course a complete reverse of this situation where excessively strong signals are involved, this being another reason for requesting your location.

Another factor to keep in mind is that there is constant engineering work taking place at Crystal Palace in preparation for the switchover in April, so glitches and breaks in reception has to be expected at any time.

Hi. Postcode HP10 8ES. Have an aerial with 8 crossbars, installed 6 years ago on pole attached to outside of chimney. Feeds into amplifier in loft and to 4 sets around the house.
Worked ok on freeview until a couple of weeks ago when we started losing sky news, dave and a few other channels - all late at night. Unable to receive HD channels at all.
Tried retuning - no difference.
2 nights ago lost them again and they have stayed lost, even during the day!
Suggestions please.....(do I need a high gain aerial?)
Thanks

Thanks jb38, I have a N12 postcode, as you say my tv seems more sensitive, in the meantime I am going to assume I can no longer get freeview reception on my 2 set top boxes and will have to watch the 5 channels until I get a signal again, or wait till the switch over and get a new tv.

Thea: N14 indicates that you can be located at around 14 miles or so away from Crystal Palace, and which at present anyway somewhat eliminates the possibility of your signal being too strong.

I will say though that "if" the method you used to split the signal was not done by using a powered splitter then that will result in signal being weaker to both devices, the way to test being to by pass the splitter and have the aerial feeding directly into the device that shows no signal, this followed by carrying out an auto-tune to see what comes up.

If this worked then using a two way powered splitter would most likely cure the problem presently experienced, but its best that you don't make any radical changes at present as come April 18th when Crystal Palace switched to high power there should be a massive difference in your signal strength anyway making this type of splitter unnecessary.
