Helen: I've responded extensively in the exchange with Gerry, of which you ask similar questions.

All Freeview transmitters broadcast on low power pre-switchover for the simple fact that there aren't enough spare channels/frequencies for them to operate high-power analogue and high-power digital at the same time. Thus, there are quite a few on the fringes who only receive Freeview at switchover.

On the basis that the analogue signals propagate to your location, it is expected that the full-power digital ones will. In 10 days time you will know whether you can receive BBC channels via Freeview. I think that there is a good chance that where there is good analogue reception, that there will be good digital reception after switchover.

The reason for exact engineering works is quite irrelevant. In general it is to do with the transmission of TV signals and not because engineers have nothing better to do.

Gerry: There is no contact channel to the broadcast authorities for viewers. There are no guarantees of reception available, it doesn't work that way.

It will all be worked out in advance using computers.

I cannot believe that, should you not be able to receive post-switchover, you are thinking that you may be able to ring them up and get the transmitter adjusted!

I've given my six penith and I think that the best thing you can do is forget about it until next Wednesday. I believe that the likely answer is that it will all work fine.

sean here. i fit aerials for over 20 years and when this switchover happens signals will overload when the power is turned way up so messing up lots of peoples freeview due to overpowering the signal received....if this does happen its gonna be a bleak christmas with no tv as every installer in the country will be out trying to decrease the incoming signal to tvs so as to get a better reception...hopefully im wrong.................

Gerry: A mast-head amplifier which you have may provide benefit with digital reception. It depends on your situation.

There is a wealth of information on ATV Sheffield's site. Basically the purpose of the amp is to make a small good quality signal into a big good quality signal. See:

Television Aerial Boosters / Amplifiers, Splitters, Diplexers & Triplexers

It is possible that there is too much amplification and with digital signals this appears the same as low signal. If the signal is high and overwhelming the tuner then the signal strength can jump up and down (there is also likely to be poor quality). If it gets even higher the signal strength could register no or little signal.

Exactly what happens varies by device, but be aware that poor "low" signal could be caused by over amplification.

What I suggest that you do is wait until 24th.

The full list of Freeview services is here:

DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex

The COM channels (see that page) are at half power to the PSB ones from Limavady, so if there is difficulty with any, it will be likely to affect these. This doesn't mean that the signal will only propagate half as far or that half as many people will be able to receive it. It is likely to affect a few on the fringes of coverage. Unfortunately this is the compromise we have as the COM channels do not have as great a coverage as the PSBs.

As I say, I wouldn't worry about it; just see what you get come 24th.
