J Carroll: Hold the Standby button on the machine for about five seconds when it locks up, rather than powering off at the mains.

Set the Country to France when doing an "Easy Setup". Presumably France uses a different EPG system as it isn't populated, but at least programmes can be viewed. I guess that the effect is to disable the EPG which appears to be the source of the issue.

Thanks Sue and Dave

I've set to France and this has brought back the picture (wrong format but at least it's back). No digital guide but manual set for record works, though switch off end means the reset to France is needed again when turning back on.

J Carroll: What did you mean by "wrong format" in your response?

Hi Dave, I meant the dimsensions of the Picture. No matter how set picture ratio eg 16/9, it remains the small shape with black bands down each side

J Carroll: Perhaps that is due to the aspect ratio settings in your TV, that is your TV is "squashing" the picture for some reason. I would have a play about with the TV settings, perhaps noting down what it was on before because with these things there are so many possibilities that before you know it you can't get back to where you were previously because you can't remember what it was on!

I have a 4:3 TV and so use "4:3 Letterbox". Having done a hard reset (hold Stop and press Power/Standby on the machine) it comes up in 16:9 squashed.

Hi Dave, I've supposed to have checked all TV and Video ratio settings but I'll give them another try. Thanks for your help.

I have a Sony RDR HXD 995 and I have lost my EPG information. The recorder has been in up date mode all day but there is still no EPG when I switch it on. My relative has the same problem with the same recorder so presumably this has been caused by something external.
The previously recorded programmes are all there and can be played.
Any suggestions?

Chris Hall: I rang a Mobile G4 network helpline and was told lots have people have been ringing in complaining about loss of signal to Sony freeview hardware following an update on 19 July. Was told to check thier website for info or to ring a helpline number (that only operateds weekday office hours). Could do with some better suggestions though

Peter J: With regards to narrow picture this occurs after the factory reset. to get full width back go into initial setup. select HDMI & change the normal setting to full. That will correct that particular problem. Lets hope Sony can solve the others!

My Sony HXD890 had the same problem, but I have managed to get it all working again, including the EPG. I disconnected the aerial, ran easy setup without scanning for stations, then set the country to "other" before selecting the digital epg.

Just recorded the tour de france using the EPG.....
