The symbol shows the location of the Tacolneston (Norfolk, England) transmitter which serves 330,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Tacolneston (Norfolk, England) mast?

have you ever thought that the issue may be with your system rather than the transmission being sent?

In the middle of September I started having trouble with my Sony Hard disc video recorder. It kept finding new channels, which were always BBC 1 or 2 and the previous tuning of that channel became pixilated. Our 2yr old Samsung TV appeared not affected. This constant channel retuning obviously prevented any recording of BBC. I assumed that the 6yr old Sony was faulty, and as we were going on holiday, bought a new Panasonic replacement. This appeared to solve the problem, but has now begun again. I've just done a complete retune, first with the AE lead out then in, and watching the channels being found, can see all are signal strength 10 except for all the BBC ones (on Ch55) which are 3. I always understood that the final switchover to Digital was going to improve reception not prevent watching the very channels I pay my licence fee for.

Sorry should have added my postcode, It's NR338DB, this was apparently a no go area for CH5 in alalog days and required a more powerfull aerial fitted for the start of freeview, which we received well until last month.

John Read: My Sony recorder is a little younger than yours, but it too picks up BBC1 and records it as a blank screen or badly broken up picture (in fact it happened last week). The reason is because the tuner is pretty sensitive, and picks up 'other' BBC1's, etc. These are normally stored in the 800 numbers, but the machine can suddenly be fooled into thinking that thats BBC1, which of course then breaks up!

Your central problem (and signal stregth 10 is the clincher) is too much signal - your powerful aerial, etc is now working against you. Talconeston seems to have had engineering works, and its seems to be a pattern that such work then results in a more powerful signal. Thats OK but for some, the signal is over the top - 75% is perfect, although you can go highre, but my Sony starts to go at 93%, and Panasonic tuners are known to be sensitive.

The BBC channels might actually be more than 10, but the signal is too much, and go show a low reading instead.

Cut out any boosters etc, and look at this :https://ukfree.tv/fullstory.php?storyid=1107051892

S Hall - I suspect you might have the same problem.

John Read: I've been having exactly the same problems in NR34 since mid-september. It's been particualrly bad the last couple of days since it has been very windy. My signal strength is similar on all UHF channels at around 50% but only on channel 55 does the signal quality constantly jump around between 10 and 90%. All other UHF channels have a constant 100& signal quality. Since I'm not that far from you maybe the problems are related, I have a Humax HDR.

Mike B, many thanks for your post, I've just removed the aeriel amp from the setup, and there's no difference, in vision. I've just checked the setup bar graphs and realised that was the bar graph called signal quality, not strength that's showing only 3/10, for those programs on Ch55 ie BBC. (all others are 10/10.) The bar called signal strength doesn't show anything at all, except for an occasional flash of full bar red, when changing channels. This appears the same with the ae amp in or out. Anyway I'll try it for a few days and see whether I get the "new" channel problems again.

Many thanks again John

I am having the same problems with Channel 55 and I live in Suffolf (IP17). Seems the common factor here is the Tacolneston transmitter. Something changed in the last few days.

I wish some-one would fix it as BBC is currently unwatchable and as you said those are the channels we're paying our licence fee for!

gweneh: If you read the reply to your previous posts, you'd see jb38 has pointed out that many aerials are pointing to the local Aldeburgh relay transmitter so reception of channel 55 may not be great - as confirmed by the Digital UK tradeview predicted ch55 to be variable at your location.

I live in Eye, Suffolk, and the BBC channels have suddenly disappeared today. I have tried retuning, even gone back to shipping condition and retuned from there. Still no BBC channels.

Michael, I've been struggling with all BBC channels since last week. Firstly on my recorder, then finally last night also on TV. Both tuners are refusing to scan CH55, where all the BBC channels reside. The Tacolnston notice above mention work but says that TV Digital is normal, but there's a notice on the TV saying Childrens BBC is also going to be available on HD soon. Is this a sign that normal TV is going in favour of HD? I'm in Lowestoft.
