Gary: The main purpose of COM7 is to encourage viewers to equip themselves with receivers that support DVB-T2 transmissions and aerials that are capable of picking up signals in the C21 to C37 frequency range. This is in readiness for a proposed change for the COM muxes to adopt DVB-T2 working on C22, C25, and C28 from most/all full Freeview sites , starting possibly in 2018. PSB1 and PSB2 would, subject to Ofcom approval, also adopt DVB-T2 in the near future, this being subject to enough people having DVB-T2 equipment. The PSB transmissions currently using C49 to C60 would change frequency to enable more spectrum to be sold off for 4G/5G mobile usage.

I'm just wondering why COM7 from Winter Hill is so RUBBISH in Southport is it due to reduced power ( 14KW compared to 100KW on other multiplexes ) or is it just bad antenna design for Channel 31 ?

Michael Rhodes: Go to the map above and click "HD-com7 (h)" and you will see that there is a null in the direction of Southport and Formby down to just north of Crosby. I'm not sure why that might be as there appear to be no other transmitters in that direction on C31.
I suggest that it is either because of possible interference with Ireland, or (more likely) the antenna array has a null in it. The antennas used by the 30 transmitters which carry COM7 are ones that were already in existance from pre-switchover, this being to keep the costs of COM7 and COM8 down. I seem to recall that one of the experts on here said that Winter Hill's COM7/8 antenna array was previously used in Croydon - perhaps the null from Winter Hill faces the least population so that the null affects the least number of people. If you're lucky you might be able to receive COM 7 (and 8 when it comes on air) from Moel-y-Parc - a C37 diplexer will allow you to combine two aerials and watch all programmes from Winter Hill plus MyP's COM7 and COM8 on 32 and 34 respectively.

Does anyone know why there is a Freeview recommended RETUNE for Winter Hill on 3rd September? Could it be anything to do with the poor COM7 in the Southport area? I've just lost the three BBC HD COM7 channels (BBC News HD, BBC4 HD and CBeebiesHD) and not sure yet why - but could be my aerial has moved in the recent winds.

Paul Hunter:
It's nothing to do with any reception problems.
It's a national retune to take into account a change of some Freeview EPG channel numbers. As an example, the news channels that currently start at 80 will move to 130 upwards.

I live close to the poor Southport reception area for COM 7 from Winter Hill. I used to be able to receive the COM 7 hd channel with an old standard aerial, but it moved in the wind and now I have lost the COM7 HD channels. What type of aerial should I buy as a replacement to ensure I can get the missing channels back?
Thanks
