Thanks for the response re Malvern com4/ArqA. Without doing anything at our end the pictures were miraculously restored by 1700hrs today (Tuesday)! I suspect the transmitter had been down on power or off and we could have been receiving ridge hill. Our aerial was installed at the start of free-view and has worked OK ever since.
Many thanks.

jb38: More problems with Malvern com4. It's very intermittent (some days ok others not) and my wife is losing patience (no cooking ch). We appear to be on right transmitter - ch59 but sig quality is red (bad) and strength about 75percent at present.. Tried manual retune but just says "no more channels found". When doing channel autosearch none of the com4 ones appear. We also have a non-self tuning dvb set which (today) is showing all com4 channels without problem.
Any suggestions please?

John Brown: Referring to the non-self tuning set, does it receive all channels OK? if it does, try temporarily connecting it into the aerial socket used by your main TV and check for any changes in quality, especially on the channels you are having problems with on your main set.

It would also be prudent to check the strength / quality of the channels on the second set (or box) "before" temporarily moving it, comparing the results obtained with that when connected into the aerial socket used by your main set, any changes to that previous seen indicating a problem with either the aerial socket, or wherever its fed from.

But though, could you please clarify on the following point, is the reference to COM4 just a typo error?, as COM5 ArqA was the channel mentioned on your original posting, C59 being Malvern's ArqA.

It would also be of assistance if you could confirm that your aerial is mounted vertically to receive transmissions from Malvern, and not horizontally to suit Ridge Hill.

John Brown: Small after thought, before doing anything, try wiggling the aerial connector that's plugged into the TV whilst on one of the problem channels.

jb38: Aerial has vertical poles. Checked non-self tune set in incoming aerial socket and all channels OK, including dodgy ones. (Note have a mains powered booster - non tune set only works after this).
There is a large Lidl store being built about 400m from here (line of site from aerial position I would think). This is steel frame building with flattish roof and they are now cladding the vertical faces with steel sheets. This building lies slightly to the right of aerial setting. Problems only started about the time roof was being fixed. Could this be the problem?

John Brown: Judging by that said in the first paragraph of your update, is inclined to suggest that your problem is caused by the signal level received from the transmitter running at a level thats only slightly above the minimum required to resolve a picture, the fact of your non-self tuning set being able to receive all channels OK (albeit only via the booster) simply being down to it being fitted with a tad more sensitive tuner, as tuners can vary from set to set, even within the same manufacturer.

On the subject of the construction of Lidl's new building, large metal frameworks can indeed have a very adverse affect on the reception of Freeview signals, especially if they are being being received at a less than desirable level to start off with, the fact of you having observed a time factor in the start of your problems somewhat backing this up, likewise cannot be discounted.

You should carry out a signal strength & quality (particularly the latter) check on one of the dodgy channels, noting if both S&Q are seen to be erratic, or its a case of the strength basically remaining the same but the quality is seen to be erratic, because if both S&Q are reasonably stable but at only about 50% or so , then a higher powered booster might help the problem.

By the way, are your two sets fed from individual outlets on your booster, and if possible, could you have a look at the booster and check what dB gain level is marked on it , or alternatively, just the model number of the device in question.

Booster is Fringe Electronics P1290-2 . System is - incoming aerial /tee in lead to first set in bedroom (I think there may be some form of passive booster, if that is possible)/ lead continues to outlet in living room which is connected to mains booster. One output goes to non tune set, the other to pvr which then has HDMI to telly. This set works fine if used via pvr. First set is really the only one that cannot be viewed properly - but this is the one my wife uses!
Dodgy channels show bad signal when switching to them. - both sets are Panasonic.
I'm now inclined to agree that aerial is misaligned and will try to correct. I notice that a lot of aerials around here have what look like cross shaped poles and point towards Malvern. Would these also collect from Ridge Hill? Is there any benefit?

John Brown

Problem solved! 4g aerials directly in line between us and Malvern transmitter. Now have new aerial and retuned to Sutton Coldfield. Because the problem was not of my making, but the government's, which department do I send the bill to?
