TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT : Pleased that you have managed to find the reason for your problem. But though as far as your DVD recorder / player is concerned, if it still works OK then there is no reason to change it, as you can resolve the problem referred to by purchasing a small two-way powered splitter, this device supplying the DVD and TV with identical input levels isolated from each other.

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: Re The two way splitter referred to in my reply. Rather than using the powered version its best to initially try one of those simple low cost non powered "Y" types for the following reason.

Daisy chaining the aerial through "some" devices of the older variety can actually increase the signal level being fed into the TV, and if your DVD recorder comes into this category? the missing PSB channels problem might possibly be caused by the TV's tuner being overloaded for this very reason, as channels do not normally disappear by passing the aerial through DVD recorders etc prior being connected into a TV.

I would be interested to know the model number of the device in question, as some types had a switchable signal boosting facility.

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: In addition to that said in my previous reply, and although unlikely to apply, but if your DVD recorder / player is indeed one of the older variety? then it might be fitted with an RF modulator similar to that found in older Freeview boxes / VCR's etc, if it does? then make sure that the RF modulators output channel is set above C60 to avoid interference to Freeview reception, as C21 would wipe out reception of Rowridge's PSB3 / BBC B channels, i.e: 101 - 105.

If I recall correctly, RF modulators were mostly centred on CH36.

James Watt:

That was correct several years ago but for the last 15 years or more many equipments have had adjustable modultaors that could be set between Ch21-68. The objective of such range was for the instances where the previously 'unused' channels (35-38) became occupied by a broadcasting service. That then meant that if the modulator could not be adjusted away from that range (as most older ones couldn't) then the user suffered interference from the modulator signal, either co-channel, adjacent channel or adjacent+2 - all of which are problematic for viewers.

Such adjacency is less of a problem with digitally encoded UHF TV transmissions as they carry error correction capabilities that were not suitable for analogue encoded UHF TV transmissions.

James Watt: Yes, as the RF modulators fitted into analogue VCR recorders of the real yesteryear variety were pre-set from the factory around C36, the only adjustment possible (although only in the 30's) being of a sweep nature via a screwdriver inserted into a small hole in the rear panel of the device. However in later devices where the modulators RF output channel was set up via the menu, C21 was (in my experience) the pre-set starting channel, the RF output channel being adjustable between 21 - 68.

jb38: Hi there, PROBLEM SOLVED! My DVD recorder has the facility to either adjust the RF output or if connected to the TV thru scart turn off altogether which was the option I chose and the result was I am now receiving all the HD channels I was missing. Thank you very much for your excellent help, your speedy response and advice. I have learned a great deal from our exchanges and am very grateful.

TIMOTHY GAUNTLETT: Excellent news!, really pleased to see that you have succeeded in rectifying the problem, because as an engineer (albeit RF) of many years standing, I am always interested in the outcome of problems which could be said to come into the category of "odd".

Many thanks for the kind comments.

Regards / jb.

Hello

I live in Winchester and was watching channel 107 (BBC News HD) when the signal strength suddenly dropped to 42% static and quality to 5% fluctuating to 10% according to my Samsung television. Channel 101 etc are strength 55% and quality 100%. My post code is so224nn. Is there a problem with the Rowridge transmitter?

Regards
Peter

peter: Hi, Peter. Rowridge has no reported problems and so you need to carry out a thorough check of your setup including aerial condition and orientation, the condition of the down-lead, the condition of connections at the wall-plate and the set, the condition of the fly-lead linking the wall plate to your set, and so on, Richard, Norwich.
