The symbol shows the location of the Reigate (Surrey, England) transmitter which serves 70,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Reigate (Surrey, England) mast?

Warburton: If all other muxes are at full strength then you may well be suffering with signal overload, where there is too much signal for the tuner to handle, which can give readings that look like a weak signal. By line of sight, do you mean that you are close enough to see the transmitter if the tree wasn't there? I would try an attenuator such as the one linked below which connects between your aerial and the TV and acts to reduce the signal level. There are different strengths available, so it may be worth getting 3dB, 6dB, 9dB etc and try each to see what brings the signal strength down enough to resolve the problem but without it going too low (you're aiming for a signal strength of around 70%-85%). If you need any further advice, please provide a full postcode so we can see where you are in relation to the transmitter and your predicted signal strength etc.

StevensOnln1: Thanks. Since it is Channel 60 only I now wonder if it is 4G 800MHz related. I shall give at 80 a call.
Yes, I could see transmitter if tree were not there!

Warburton:

Trees are well known to be able to cause selective reception problems, so I'm not surprised that only one channel is affected.

Check what signal strengths are reported for all the multiplexes on your TV set (the User Manual will tell you how). You should be aiming for at least 50% on SD and 60% on HD but not more than 85% on either. If your strengths are greater then you need an attenuator as suggested by StevensOnln1. If channel 60 is weaker than 50% then you may need to reposition your aerial, if possible, so it looks past the tree rather than through it.

If you put your full post code into this website, you can examine a mapping of the area and that will show whether any mobile masts are close enough to cause any problems. By all means contact at800 and if they consider it wise they may well provide a free filter to put in your aerial lead behind the TV set (use an extra flylead so the weight of the filter does not 'hang' on the aerial input socket).

Bear: Reigate broadcasts the PSB3 multiplex, which carries BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD & CBBC HD. It doesn't broadcast COM7 or COM 8 which carry additional HD channels such as BBC4 HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD, Channel4 +1 HD, 4Seven HD, Al Jazeera HD, RT HD, BT Showcase HD and SD channels such as FreeSports, Forces TV, Keep It Country and various others. If you provide a full postcode you'll be able to access the Digital UK coverage checker, which will indicate whether Crystal Palace is likely to provide good reception at your location.

Thanks for the feedback, my current Aerial I believe is picking up crystal palace however I do not get any of the. Hd channels but all the others are good strong signals with no interference may be my intergrated freeview set is just to old in the chipset! But to be honest when we put the Aerial up we just pointed in the general direction of other Aerials so perhaps I should grab a compass and check it out?

Bear: The coverage checker shows Crystal Palace to be the best transmitter at your location. If you don't have any HD channels on 101-115 then your TV does not have the correct tuner required for HD channels on Freeview (if your TV had a HD Ready or Full HD logo that just indicates the it can display a HD picture via a HDMI input). You would need a TV or set top box/PVR with the Freeview HD logo to receive HD channels.

Transmitter engineering: I am very close to the Reigate transmitter and have no BBC normal channels and no HD channels at all for the last few days. I have retuned, and factory reset my Youview box multiple times and had my arial installer out today to check that it had not lost position. Any ideas?

David McDaniel:

Please can you tell us your full post code so we can check the predicted reception conditions for your location?

There are no reported engineering works at present on the Reigate transmitter so the problem has to be within your property, either a poor aerial connection or else a fault in the equipment.

By retuning your equipment has lost all of the previously saved tuning data, so it is always a bad idea to do a retune when 'No Signal' is reported. When you do get signals, what are the signal strengths shown as?
