The symbol shows the location of the Belmont (Lincolnshire, England) transmitter which serves 710,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Belmont (Lincolnshire, England) mast?

PE32 Sunday and Monday 5/6 June we had no TV at all, not normal TV no freeview, neither did our neighbours and people in Gayton as well as Gayton Thorpe. Tonight it has gone off again and just comes on and off every now and again. We cannot record anything, and all scheduled recording have failed. We rang our TV ariel engineer as we have not long had a quite expensive ariel installed - he told us there must be a problem with the Belmont transmitter as hes getting lots of calls. So Belmont transmitter who are reporting no problems - WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON PLEASE?? Are we on low [power, is it atmospherics ?????

Jackie: Yes!, as in most cases the problem is not caused by anything connected with the transmitter, but due to a wave of high pressure which is circling around the UK resulting in distant stations being received, the problem being, that "if" any of the channels used by the distant station coincide with that used by the station normally used for reception, this will either wipe out reception completely, or alternatively result in high levels of glitching due to the data carried on the local signal being corrupted by signals from the distant transmitter.

Needless to say, nothing can really be done to help alleviate the problem except to wait until the situation improves, which judging by that seen wont really be until around late next Monday.

By the way, the reason I said "in most cases", is simply because transmitter maintenance is being carried out on some stations, yours not being.

MikeP: Thankyou for your advice, I'm sorry i didn't catch it before I wrote again this morning - I have looked at the Mendips transmitter and I think coverage generally would be better from the Stockland Hill transmitter - our postcode is TA4 2LU and we have no problems with freeview TV at all - only that this channel is no longer available. Are you saying the Stockland Hill transmitter is a 'lighter' transmitter than Mendips, so it transmits fewer channels? Or is it Aljazeera's choice to not pay to transmitted from there? Is it more expensive to transmit on HD? If I changed to mendips would that guarantee getting the channel 108? I am worried about changing and then getting other problems with reception. Thanks, Rachel

Rachel:

The coverage predictor below your post shows that though Stockland Hill is considered by DigitalUK as being the better choice, it also shows that reception of the ARQA and ARQB multiplexes is at best variable and reception of the SDN multiplex is poor.

Looking at the pages on this website relevant to Stockland Hill, at Which Freeview channels does the Stockland Hill transmitter broadcast? ,">https://ukfree.tv/transmi…ill, shows that Al Jazeera is transmitted on COM6/ARQB and is an HD service. SInce the coverage prediction by DigitalUK, on Coverage Checker - Detailed View shows that multiplex as being variable at your location it is highly likely that you will always have reception problems. Note also that to get the channel you need either a full HD TV or a modern Freeview Set Top Box that includes and HD capability. (An 'HD ready' TV does not have an HD tuner so cannot get any of the services on an HD multiplex.)

Also, looking at the coverage map at Which Freeview channels does the Stockland Hill transmitter broadcast? shows that most of the area around Taunton is not served by Stockland Hill at all, hence the reception being at best variable or even poor.

Hi,
My ariel is pointed towards the Belmont transmitter and since changing to digital l have had no reception problems. However, since May/June 2016 l have had reception problems, even losing all TV reception at one point. The main channels did come back but now half the freeview channels have no signal or the picture sound continually breaks up. I fitted a new ariel a couple of weeks ago but l still have the same problem. I do have a signal booster which appears to be ok. The funny thing is l also have a freeview indoor ariel for the bedroom and the freeview signal was always good but now l am getting the same problems with this ariel which leads me to believe the Belmont ariel is transmitting a less powerful signal. My post code is HU17 7QY, any explanations for the above?

John Mulcahy: You may be suffering with interference from a recently upgraded 4G mobile phone mast nearby. If you contact an organisation called AT800 (https://at800.tv) they can check whether this is the case and if needed send you out a free filter to connect to your aerial system which should suppress the interference if that is the cause.

John Mulcahy:

Further to that said by StevensOlnl1, you should check what the signal strength is for each of the available multiplexes. Too little or too much signal can cause the symptoms you describe and the only way of telling is to check the strength indicated on the TV. Ideally the strength should be between 60% and 85%. If it is higher then that causes the TV to report 'no signal' as the tuner is overloaded. If it is less then the set is having problems decoding the signals as there just isn't enough.

Bear in mind also that warm weather can cause temperature inversion effects that tend to disrupt reception in some areas.

We are experiencing poor reception on Freeview channels (all) and DAB and FM radio.
Is this a local interference problem, or is everybody affected?
