The symbol shows the location of the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) transmitter which serves 4,490,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) mast?

John: If you are using a Freesat box then that has nothing to do with Digital UK and the terrestrial switchover as it comes from a satellite.

The Digital UK predictor is just that and should not be taken as a definite. Reception depends on a variety of things. Local obstructions are likely to inhibit it whereas those with larger more sensitive aerials are likely to be able to pick things that others can't.

Whether you can get a signal at your location with your aerial is best proved by trying it.

Thank you for supplying this information.
I'm in the South East London / North Kent area.
It confirms my suspicions about why I can't get a picture most of the time on freeview ITV1, Channel 4 & Channel 5 when reception for the main BBC Channels is excellent.
Under the circumstances wouldn't it be a good idea to prioritise channel availability so the most popular TV channels, showing better quality programs, get allocated to MUX groups with the most effective power transmission levels until the Muxs 2 & A deficiencies at Crystal Palace can be rectified?

Thanks to Dave Lindsay who replied to my earlier query.

Was a typo, I meant to say Freeview not Freesat.

Down here in Crawley I cannot get any channels at all.

John

Oxted

Hi,

I am doing some research on behalf of my elderly Mother who lives halfway down Beatrice Road in Oxted, Surrey RH8 0PZ.

Owing to its location, in a valley, it was not possible to receive a terrestrial signal from Crystal Palace, so my parents had a Sky box feeding their old analogue set. However, we have now replaced the old TV with a new Sony, HD flat screen with built-in Freeveiw+ and dumpled the Sky box. Because .... if I check on-line with such sites as digitaluk.co.uk or Freeview, I am assured that my Mother will be able to receive a digital signal, via Freeview, from Crystal Palace on her new set as from 18th April.

Despite retuning my Mothers set on several visits, we are unable to receive any digital signals at all and the TV reports 0 digital stations which surprises me as usually there are some digital signals transmitted prior to switchover.

I would be very interested to hear whether my Mother will be able to recieve digital Television signals in Oxted and your professional thoughts on this situation woudl be much apprecited.

With thanks,

Kind regards,

DR Tucker

DR Tucker: Before switchover the digital signals are broadcast on lower power and are therefore not as strong as they will be when switchover happens. This means that the footprint of the current digital services does not meet the current analogue ones.

If the valley is the issue, then it might be that the current low power signals from Crystal Palace aren't strong enough for its residents to receive, whereas when their power is increased in April, it will.

Because of this, there will always be some people who cannot get digital prior to switchover, even though they receive analogue from a transmitter that carries digital.

DR Tucker: Just to add to what's already been said. Although as Dave Lindsay has mentioned it might well be the case that the present low power signals are just really not strong enough to be received properly at the location mentioned, but though its not by any means guaranteed that they will be either once that Crystal Palace is on high power, as although the reception predictor does have its faults because it cannot cater for local conditions, it does not however give what I consider to be very good indications for reception at this post code, as the three commercial multiplexes (on the same power as the PSB muxes) are indicated as being variable right into 2014, and as an engineer that would raise my suspicions as to the stability of "any" signals received.

What I would advise you to do is, rather than using an auto-tune in an attempt to pick the channels go into the "manual tune" menu and enter Ch23 (BBC) observing if anything immediately shows on the signal strength / quality indicator, which if it does is inclined to indicate that you "might" be OK once the station is on high power operation, also try this same test on Ch22 (ITV), but though should nothing show on the strength bar then it doesn't look at all promising.

The reason for this test is, that although you haven't picked anything up a signal can still be there but just at a level not high enough to resolve a picture.

I would personally have suggested that a TV with Freesat built in would have been a much safer choice for use at your mothers location, as this would have connected into the Sky dish with no alterations having been necessary.

We seem to have lost all channels in multiplexe A. We used to receive these until Christal Palace had an upgrade now we can not get them. Having purchased a TV with built in Freeview now we cannot get the channels. The government should do something as it is them that are switching off the ann signal.

Kelly: Try carrying out a signal level check on MuxA / Ch32 as it might be just under the level than can resolve a picture, this meaning that you would require an amplifier to bring it up slightly enough to get over this problem, something which might not change any until next April when the station goes over to high power operation.

John:
Hello everyone.

I just obtained a different Freeview box and now I can receive the whole range of channels down here in Crawley from the Crystal Palace transmitter. These are coming through my 20 yr old aerial.

Thanks for everyone's previous comments

John

John: It might be the differing sensitivities of the different receiver boxes. I wouldn't be surprised if the signal breaks up sometimes prior to switchover.

It demonstrates (as clear as any such demonstration can be) that you will likely get Freeview no problems after switchover.
