The symbol shows the location of the Mendip (Somerset, England) transmitter which serves 720,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Mendip (Somerset, England) mast?

Andrew Sparkes :

Channel4 and Film4 are both on the D3&4/PSB2 multiplex the same as a number of ITV channels - see Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for which channels are on which multiplex. Did you not notice similar problems with ITV?

Mendip had been listed for Planned Engineering (Possible weak signal) so that might have caused an issue. As you probably know, in your location (assuming you haven't moved) you can receive two other main transmitters - Wenvoe & Stockland Hill. If Mendip was weak when you retuned you might have become inadvertently not tuned to Mendip. Check in your TV's tuning section that you are correctly tuned to Mendip's UHF channels. See my post 3 before yours (9th Jan.).

I'm in Chipping Sodbury and don't seem to be able to get channel 51 Sony Classic Movies. I've tried a rescan but no joy. The freeview.co.uk site mentions "planned engineering work" at Mendip. Might this be the problem?

For last few days (5 March) no BBC reception (all stations, TV and Radio).
Other stations OK.
Usual standard advice from BBC - do reset, old aerial etc.
Please explain - why suddenly, why only BBC?

Fiona: Please provide a full postcode so that we can see what the predicted reception is at your exact location. Were you previously receiving Sony Classic Movies? If you were, it may be that broadcast power has been reduced temporarily whilst the engineering work is taking place.

Barrie: We need to know where you are (please provide a full postcode) to know what reception is predicted to be like at your location. There is currently planned engineering work taking place at Mendip, which may result in the transmitter broadcasting at lower power temporarily whilst the work takes place. Have you checked for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV? If you retuned whilst the channels were missing you may have deleted the correct tuning data for the missing channels.

Barrie:

As already mentioned there is Planned Engineering listed for Mendip at present. If your set auto-retuned when signal was interrupted (if it has that function turn it off, it's more trouble than it's worth) or you retuned, then as StevensOnln1 has already said it can clear the correct tuning!

At time of posting Mendip is transmitting at normal power, try a manual tune on UHF channel C32 (the BBCA/PSB1 multiplex) to see if it restores the channels. If you have an HD/T2 tuner and the HD channels are also missing, try a manual tune on UHF C35.

If you still have no luck, as already advised, check connections and check your aerial is intact and still pointing in the correct direction. If you need more help, please provide a full postcode so we can examine predicted reception at your locale.

Fiona:

How old is your aerial?

The Sony Movies Classic channel is broadcast on the Local Multiplex which doesn't have the same coverage as the other main multiplexes carrying other main channels BUT it should still be receivable in most parts of Chipping Sodbury, see Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for which programme are carried on which multiplex.
As StevensOnln1 has already said we need a full postcode to look at predicted reception in your locale.
The Local multiplex is on UHF channel C30 from Mendip. You could try a manual tune as that may pickup the channel. Auto-tune sometimes misses weaker signals.

If your aerial is an old aerial group C/D then you may have occasional trouble with the main BBC SD channels (the BBCA/PSB1 multiplex is on UHF C32) and may not be able to get the Local multiplex on C30. These days you may need a Group T/Wideband aerial to get all the multiplexes satisfactorily (depending on location).
Do you have intermittent problems with other channels?

Loss of many channels, some HD and some non-HD since November 2020at BS30 6US.

Sometimes some work after retune but only for a few days. Loft aerial checked for direction and fitted with 18dB amplifier then fed to 4 output splitter.

Lounge: LG HD tv, Youview + HD box for Prime via wi-fi.
Bedroom: Sony tv, Youview HD box not wi-fi.
Kitchen: Samsung HD tv.

John Bell:

According to the Freeview checker you should be getting virtually perfect reception from Mendip in your locale.
Is the loss of channels the same on each set? Some more detail might help, is it LCNs101-105, or 106/107 etc.?
Example channel LCNs may help to narrow down the issue.

How old is your aerial roughly? Likewise, how old is the amp (and splitter)?
Is the wiring to the amp & splitter plug-in connections? Check all your connections to make sure they're making a good connection.

If easily possible connect the aerial output direct to the feed for the Lounge TV and in the lounge, plug the aerial connection direct to the TV. then go into the TV Tuning section, look at Programmes and Settings, and then go to Signal strength. Post up the Signal and Quality figures for each multiplex.

I need to buy a new aerial after my builder removed the old one during the removal of our chimney. I am not sure what external aerial I need to buy to replace it. I live on hill in Weston super mare with a clear line of site to the Hutton transmitter but I would like to connect to the Mendip transmitter?
