JB: Kidderminster and Brierley Hill are both vertical and predicted to provide some coverage at your location, it could be pointed at one of those?

It's definitely picking up Ridge Hill. I tried The Wrekin and it was as worse than Ridge Hill. I'm really tempted to put tv aerial horizontal and point south. Surely if I'm picking up when it's vertical and pointing north there is a strong chance I could improve by pointing somewhere in the right direction and polarised in the right way?

JB:

Have a look at Coverage Checker - Detailed View which will show the transmitters you potentially may be able to receive from.

It definitely looks as if Sutton Coldfield might give you better results than Brierley Hill and probably better than Kidderminster. The Wrekin may give you some of the channels and Ridge Hill will be problematical.

MikeP:

Hi - I spun the aerial around towards Ridge Hill and set up horizontally and it's giving me 100% on all muxes except 55, which is 25-30% quality but watchable most of the time. No doubt if I spent a bit of time or had better equipment I could probably improve on 55 as well.

All a very strange set up here but my gamble and intuition paid off!

Update - managed to align the aerial better and getting all 8 muxes now at 100% quality from Ridge Hill so really pleased. I don't know why others are not using

Lib. :

There are unusually high levels of "Tropospheric propagation" at present, often associated with High Pressure weather systems.
These levels of propagation are unusual at this time of year - they cause signals from more distant transmitters to travel a lot further than normal. It is currently affecting different parts of the country by varying degrees and signals can change by the second or remain stable for much longer periods.
In the old "analogue" days there was a lot of talk about "continental" interference often in the summer months, but the interference can come from transmitters anywhere in the UK or Europe and even further afield. At the moment some people are getting DAB radio from the Netherlands and FM Radio from France as well as the interference to DTV.

It is predicted to continue for a couple more days, and you are advise NOT to retune as you will likely lose the correct tuning that you had. The "propagation" can be very frequency dependent, and it can only affected one frequency or several, but it can/will be different for others.

People will however have noticed the unusually mild weather which the Met office is referring to as a "Foehn effect" but it's not helpful that it seems none of the major broadcasters are making any reference to the interference being caused to TV and Radio reception! So it's no surprise that people wonder what is going on and think there is a transmitter problem.

For those that have retuned and lost correct tuning, you will have to try again and it could be hit and miss whilst the unusual propagation continues. If you are able to do a manual tune for the correct UHF channels, you may still receive interference or the wrong programmes.
The correct UHF channels for Ridge Hill (Central) are C28, C25, C22, C21, C24, C27, C55, C56 If you don't have an HD tuner ignore C22 & C55/C56. You may not get C55/56 - COMs7&8 at your location anyway.

"The area where reception of two ITV regions is intended"

The area where reception of two ITV regions is intended | RXTV info

A bit of tropo brought in BBCA, D3&4 and BBC B, off Ridge Hill a while ago and I grabbed samples of the multiplexes.

The article, linked to above, says "Changes to the signal were recently made as part of the 700MHz 5G clearance project, allowing the extra ITV service to continue - a luxury when frequencies are being repurposed for mobile services - but with new parameters to ensure a robust signal despite the various changes to TV frequencies in the area. New data from digitalbitrate.com confirms the ITV West multiplex on UHF channel 29 (538MHz) carries ITV West Country on its own, plus around 6Mbps of empty capacity."

Perhaps someone should tell Freeview, or DUK, or whoever it is that manages the NIT, about the changes.

Unfortunately C29 is occupied by Haslingden BBC B at my location so no chance of getting a sniff of that multiplex.

Note that, contrary to the service tables, digitalbitrate does not show E4+1 as being present on that multiplex:

http://www.digitalbitrate…g=en

Here is a summary, generated by my SI parser, of the service tables off the Ridge Hill BBC B.

Note the two D3&4 multiplexes and their Target Regions and transmission parameters:

David Wilson:

Can't find any reports of transmitters problems from Freeview or the BBC.
There is some fairly strong variable intermittent "Troposheric Ducting" around that's been quite strong in some parts of the country causing interference from distant transmitters (see
https://www.bbc.co.uk/rec….jpg ).
This won't necessarily affect all multiplexes (groups of channels) or affect any one or several at the same time. This might mean that retuning may not get all the channels back or even get the wrong transmitters and you'd have to retry several times once conditions stabilise. And just to cheer you up, this can often occur with the sort of weather we have at present, the interference can come from transmitters in Europe or the UK, and it's predicted to continue for several more days. Whether, and by how much, you are affected is "in the lap of the gods" to coin a phrase.
