Like all the other posts on this site, my Sony DVD player displayed Up Date last night and still does. I couldn't switch it on or off other than briefly, and when I did manage to switch it on I could get no "Guide" and it soon reverted to a blank screen, although I could view a programme I had recorded last week.
I am a 70 year old female technophobe. HELP!! the technical advice I have read on this site might just as well be in Japanese.

Christine: Try pressing and holding the Power/Standby button on the front of the machine. Hold it for about 5 seconds and it should come out of Update mode.
Then try pressing the Power button again, momentarily, in order to turn it on.

In 2009, Barbie celebrated her 50th birthday. The celebrations included a runway show in New York for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The event showcased fashions contributed by fifty well-known haute couturiers including Diane von Frstenberg, Vera Wang, Calvin Klein, Bob Mackie, and Christian Louboutin.

Thanks Dave for your suggestion. Alas my machine switches off then on again, going straight to Update. Any other suggestions will be welcome before I go bonkers?

Chris: When it goes straight to Update having pressed Power/Standby for about 5 seconds (this is a soft reset), does it not respond to a momentarily press of Power/Standby, which in my experience will interrupt its Update and turn it on?
If it doesn't then I would be inclined to unplug the incoming aerial lead followed by a soft reset and leave it doing its Update. This could perhaps take longer than normal so I would go away and leave it to it.
When I set mine to France, as a workaround to the problem, the Updates ran for almost an hour and a half.
A factory reset on these devices can be performed by holding the Stop button and pressing Power/Standby button (both buttons on the front of the machine and not the remote), this being whilst it is powered on and with any DVD/CD disc in the drive removed.

Chris: I should add that it is my understanding that a factory reset (Stop+Power) can only be performed whilst the machine is on. You might like to try it and report back whether it works whilst apparently stuck in Update mode.
