david -NYorks: Olivers Mount is predicted to have a good signal at your location, so it may be worth trying via manual tuning, however you may find that your aerial needs turning around and remounting with vertical polarity (i.e. the rods going up and down rather than side to side for Bilsdale which uses horizontal polarity) although you could be lucky and find that you get enough signal being received off the side of your aerial.

I haven't had any incoming emails for 2/3 days - is this because of the problem that ocurred at Bilsdale

Carole Dewings: If you were using a 4G mobile internet connection and cannot get a signal from another phone mast then that would prevent your emails arriving. But as you are able to post on here, you would appear to still have a working internet connection, which would suggest that the problem with your email probably has nothing to do with the Bilsdale fire.

hi
Currently in the DL8 area, the signal went off a few days back now, while patiently awaiting an update to the current situation other than a fire.
Can someone get a temporary system up and running?.
Is it possible to run an signal system a safe distance from current site while a major restoration is carried out on the existing slightly frazzled Bilsdale.
I mention because many use their free view tv as a means of company and a window to the outer world, with no free view that means they are on their own with their own thoughts.
The whole reason was free view was free, free sat needs a dish and a free sat box which is an out lay many cannot afford after the recent pandemic situation, jobs situations, and pension. so saying free sat works is not helpful, internet streaming is also not affordable for many hence why on freeview.
Strongly think the tv license for Bilsdale lack of signal areas should be reduced, or the licence expiry be extended till we are able to pick up the free view signal again.
Stay safe and please keep everyone informed how the Bilsdale situation is proceeding.
regards,
AJ

AJ:

Probably best if you read a number of our previous posts on the previous pages where explanations of some of the things going on are mentioned, along with links to places where updated information is most likely to appear first.

AJ: As per my post on the previous page, Arqiva who operate the transmitter are transporting a temporary mast to Bilsdale, but it will take anything from a few days to several weeks for it to be constructed and brought in to service. No work can take place on the existing mast until it has been confirmed to be structurally safe. Some viewers have been able to retune to other transmitters, as Bilsdale has large areas overlapping coverage with Pontop Pike and Emley Moor, although for many this may involve turning their aerial around as the alternative transmitter is usually in a different direction, however some are lucky enough to be able to receive a signal off the back of side their aerial.

The TV Licence is not a subscription and does not guarantee that any particular service will be provided, so there is little possibility of any reduction or extension of any licences. Most people with an internet connection can access BBC iPlayer for no additional cost beyond that of the TV Licence and broadband connection which have already been paid for, as well as live/on demand streaming services from ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and various other commercial broadcaster, non of which require any form of subscription payment. So whilst streaming may not be possible for everyone, it is a viable option for many who have temporarily lost Freeview reception. Freesat is a useful option for properties which have already had a dish previously installed for Sky, as most are left in place after the subscription is cancelled. A Freesat box isn't always necessary as many TVs have built in satellite tuners, so anyone with an old/unused Sky dish should check for a screw-on satellite connection on the back of their TV.

The BBC have created a dedicated reception advice page, where you can subscribe to receive further updates via email:

Bilsdale is off air on all services until further notice following a fire in one of the transmitter buildings & a lower stage of the mast.

There are concerns the structure of this tubular mast may have become unsafe.
