Peter: With technical fault-finding like this, it's a case of eliminating possibilities, targetting the most likely ones first.

As there is no way of measuring the signals effectively, then trying the solution of an attenuator seems the simplest method to determine whether this is the issue.

However, I have a few more thoughts that you might investigate before getting an attenuator:

Check that the receiver is tuned to Reigate for all its services and not another transmitter such as Crystal Palace. This is to ensure that the picture you are seeing (that you don't see at times) is coming from Reigate.

See "After switchover configuration" here: Freeview multiplexes | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

For one service from each of those five (or six if it's HD) multiplexes bring up the signal strength screen and ensure that it is tuned to Reigate (UHF channel numbers at the top of the page):

PSB1/BBC A = C60
PSB2/D3&4 = C57
PSB3/BBC B (HD) = C53
COM4/SDN = C21
COM5/ArqA = C24
COM6/ArqB = C27

It's also worth pointing out that you will probably need to have your Group C/D aerial replaced with a wideband for Reigate. Group C/D is the top third of the band of frequencies used for TV. The four main analogue channels were C/D and the PSBs (above) are C/D, but the COMs are in the first third of the band (Group A). So if it's the COMs you're having issues with, and you have a C/D aerial, then this may be the cause.

That said, before switchover some of the digital channels were in Group A, so this issue may have cropped up before and therefore you may have already had the aerial replaced.

Godstone

Hi. I live in Godstone, RH9 8AJ, and have a Wide Band Aerial, mounted on the eves of my house, pointing to the Reigate transmitter.
Since the 18th April retune my digital recorder will only record the BBC channels.
All the others are stuttering and missing bits.
The recorder is a Digihome DTR160. It is watchable direct on all channels when not recording
My Toshiba freeview HD Television is perfect
on all channels.
As all was fine before switchover, I could even record two channels at once, what could
have gone so wrong.
Thanks for any help. Eric

If i knew Eric on what could have gone wrong with your set up i would be millionaire
The problem is none of us know and we will need to find out but it could take a while as all those responsible for the switch over wont confess to getting it wrong

And so the saga continues. I can get normal recption on my second set upstairs. Also, it records normally on teh main set with no interference on the recording. I have switched on the dvd recorder and channels there seem ok. But I still occasional pixillation mainly in evening on main set.

Eric Hayman: Your PVR uses a Vestel T825 chassis which are notorious for problems caused by the new transmission modes that came into being at switch over, but this problem has been known about for a considerable time now and with Vestel having broadcast an over air download during June / July of 2010 to overcome these problems, so on your PVR press - Setup / configuration then look down the list to see what software version you are using as V13 is the latest.

Just a second point, you should also ensure that your signal isn't excessively high as you are located at only 6 miles or so from the transmitter and a slightly over the top signal can make the problem you refer to worse, and so if you use any type of booster bypass it, or if you don't use a booster then just for a test try a set top aerial.

Hi jb38. Thank you for your reply.
On checking the software version in my Digihome DTR160 ,as you suggested, I found it to be v2.7. That is well behind the V13 you found.
I brought the recorder from Tesco in June 2009, it is not three years old, because it could record two programs
simultaneously. Now I see how it should have updated but never had the chance because I switch off all stand electrics overnight, government save energy advice.
Looks like I will have to leave it on again overnight in case Vestal give us a second chance sometime.
Meanwhile I have resurrected my older Digihome PVR80 brought 2007, us oldies throw nothing away, which is working just fine.
As to your second point. When digital TV started, back in the On-digital days, I had to use a signal booster and even then the picture would block when a plane went by. The signal is so much better now, the booster is not used or needed. My Digihomes show 80% strength and "Very Good" signal.
Thanks again. CU Eric

Eric Hayman: Without checking I am unable at this present time to say for certain if Vestel are still providing "over air" downloads for that chassis, or whether because of it being an older chassis it can only be done by downloading the software into a PC then transferring the data into the Digihome via an RS232 cable between the PC and the box, which I unfortunately have to say is very likely to be the only way that its possible to upgrade that model now, of course this also affects about another 15 or so badge name brands (Hitachi / Sharp, etc) that also use that chassis.

However this is a link to the software download information site, and which only last week had a Vestel chassis download listed, but though you didn't miss anything as it was for a T836 which is a much later model.
