Jon Norris: Or in addition to the link supplied by Briantist you could just provide the brand / model number of the TV in question and its specifications can be checked out, should of course they be available as it depends entirely on the brand of the set.

Jon Norris: jb38 & Briantist. Sorry for delay and thank you for your help. TV is Samsung LE 40 N 87 BD. it was bought as HD ready. Of course, like a nonce, my freeview box is probably not HD! I thought it just passed signals through to the TV but maybe it needs to be HD capable too.

Jon Norris: Yes, as far as the latter part of your comment thats exactly it! although if it was HD capable then it would require to be coupled into your TV via an HDMI lead, as HD signals cannot pass through a scart cable.
Just out of interest what model of Freeview box are you using? I would have specifically asked this but was unaware that you were using a box for reception and not a TV.

Jb38: called a Sagem HDMI and I am using an HDMI cable. It does often need rebooting nowadays so may have to replace anyway if I can work out which is best

Jon Norris: It depends on whether or not your receiver (a PVR recorder?) its one of the RTI 90 series? because the fact of a device having an HDMI connection facility does not necessarily mean that its an HD capable box but just one with a high quality connection, and if you click on the undermentioned link it illustrates the various hard drive sizes of Sagem HD models within the RTI 90 range.

This second link is to a selection of Humax Freeview HD PVR's a little more pricey but top quality devices with excellent tuners, the HDR-FOX T2 grade "A" model being a particularly good price, although obviously there are lower cost HD devices made by Bush and such likes around and which also give reasonably good results, although I personally find it difficult to recommend them on the grounds of reliability.

Hi,
I have just made 'the big switch' back to BT ... phone, TV and Broadband ... and they have supplied a new router and an HUMAX box.
I still retain my SKY box on 'special deal' price - because I'm a VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER - and they bribed me with a price reduced deal for about 6-9 months.
I expect to get 'fibre' from BT by September this year.
At that point I plan to switch off SKY, change to Fibre, and take the final segment of my planned BT deal - namely 'Sky Sports 1&2' and BT Infinity.
My aerials point to Astra 2 and Ridge Hill; and, so far all my connections seem very satisfactory.
My problem is ... I'm no TV guru and wouldn't know what problems to anticipate - short of a complete missing channel or such like.
Is there anything obvious I need to look for ?

Barrie - one thing you will not get, unless you use your Skydish for it, is the right BBC regional news for your area. Ridge Hill only carries midlands BBC news (whereas it does carry ITV west).
Coleford has a west relay, and if that is out of reach, then Mendip is receivable in other parts of the town. Both of these transmit BBC West, which editorially covers the Forest.

Barrie Etherington: Ridge Hill is a full-freeview transmitter (it broadcasts Public Service [PSB] and Commercial [COM] channels).
Sky Sports on digital terrestrial, for use with BT Vision, are carried on one of the COM channels:
DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex
The COM channels from Ridge Hill are on lower power than the PSBs, so if you find them to be an issue you may need to replace your aerial, either with another on Ridge Hill or one on Mendip.
Mendip will give you BBC One West and ITV West. Ridge Hill will give you BBC One West Midlands, ITV Central (South) and ITV West (it carries two PSB2 multiplexes, but only the West Midlands PSB1 one).
If Mendip isn't a possibility and you want BBC One West then you will probably have to pick it up from the Coleford relay, but it only carries PSB channels (so no Sky Sports). In which case, diplex (combine) it with the Ridge Hill one, if you can get the COM channels from there else there's not much point, unless you want to have access to West and West Midlands programming.
