Ok. So I need to check if I can get these channels (signal is low) before I purchase one?

How can you check individual channels?

Sorry for all these questions & thanks :)

Hi Brian, wonder if you can help with a visualisation.
We live in an area served by both winter hill and moel y parc . We are on the wirral . We are in the unfortunate position that we are literally directly between the two transmitters meaning that we receive both strongly. However we do not care for welsh variations. Almost all our relatively new receiving equipment will not reallocate channels by region /tranmission group. Thus we are left to manually tune all the time or I have to configure a complex st of notch filters to remove the welsh tranmission( further added to by store ton Wales).
Most aerials have acceptance angles between 33 and 20 odd degrees. I wondered if you could over lay a chord between moel and winter hill with 30 degree radiating pattern centred on the chord , that was the intersection of coverage between the two transmitters indicating the total coverage area subject to the same issue. Ultimately I like to submit to arqiva the issue that it creates.

My Sony HXD790 PVR failed again yesterday with the same problems that most people were having just over a week ago.
i.e. faulty EPG and black screen on stations. It was stuck in update mode this morning. Switching off and on again did not fix the problems.
It might just be something at Winter Hill this time, since not so many people are complaining about it.

According to Sony's own website the devices that do not filter out the 4G 800MHz frequencies that are therfore not Freeview friendly are:

RDR-HXD770, 790, 870, 890, 970, 995, 1070, and 1095. This list is not necessarily exhaustive.

The symptoms include your device showing "Update" without it ever completing and of course the loss of your Freeview channels.

Short term solution:

1. Press and hold the power button which effectively reboots your device.
2. Disconnect the power supply for 30 seconds to flush out any memory resident erroneous data that has been captured.
3. Reconnect the power supply.
4. Switch your device on again.

Long term solution:

Buy yourself a 4G filter from such places as Maplins or Argos to name but two. They are about £8 or so.

You then plug your aerial into the 4G filter and then connect the 4G filter to your device.

The role of the 4G filter is to filter out unwanted 800MHz frequencies that cause your device to experience loss of Freeview.

Note: Certain transmitters have been undergoing a realignment in readiness for the 4G mobile network.

See website: at800.tv for more detail on this very subject.

4Gsolver:

Could you please explain as to why these Sony recorders (I own a 995) should be ' devices that do not filter out the 4G 800MHz frequencies that are therfore not Freeview friendly'(I can find nothing on the Sony website).

The problem with the recorders was, as far as I'm aware, a change to the EPG software used by broadcasters, which cuased a conflict with the internal software CountrySelector - Sony There are only about 4 test areas for 4G, and certainly none near me, so how could these have had an effect on my recorder? And why would a PVR 'filter' out 800hz interference anyway?

If you look on Brianists webpage for 4G, problems will be suffered by only a very small subset of Freeview users, and filters should work fine in most cases. The nature of peoples actual receiving equipment should make no difference.

Are you just panicking people into buy 4G filers they don't need?
