The symbol shows the location of the Midhurst (West Sussex, England) transmitter which serves 94,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

GD: look at your signal path - your 28km from the transmitter, with a clear line of sight. If your signal is rubbish, what about your neighbours? If their's is fine, then it sounds like your system, although wouldn't the specialist have checked it?

I have done some tests and I don't think this is a matter for this forum. This is why. When I record BBC4 after 7pm and the DVD Recorder is tuned to a default channel beforehand which is different from BBC 4, no problem. When the DVD is tuned to BBC 4 by default , the fault occurs. Also, even if it's tuned to a different channel beforehand and then I record BBC 4 from 7 pm, same fault. It's a fault with the BBC's transmission or my DVD Recorder such that it refuses to receive the program but still carries on receiving the info screen . The reason it's only just happened is probably when I interrupted a recording on BBC 4 a few days before and then my DVD does NOT return to the default channel but stays on BBC 4.
I will pursue the fault on another forum as it's not a transmitter fault as such , I think. It's more fundamental than that. I thought I'd close the thread by reporting this anyway.

David Talks: Check what transmitter its trying to record from. My Sony PVR used to do something similar - the tuner is really sensitive and it would pull in BBC1 (which is what we were trying to record), but from a transmitter far further away. The strength was just enough to fool the PVR to try to record, but not enough to actually record something. I finally worked out the problem, and I killed the signal stength a bit with an attentuator, and after a couple of attempts, it stopped. I think David Lindsay had a similar problem with his Sony PVR.
So check the signal strength generally, and certainly see what it was actually try to record. If you put in your postcode to the site, we can see what the transmitters in your area are like, and see if its something else. Also have a look in the 800's, because thats what its might be trying to record.

I'm in Camelsdale which is a repeater off the Midhurst transmitter to cover this valley. We get a reduced MUX and it's vertically polarised, so no chance of picking up other signals.
Anyway, the DVD is trying to record BBC4 and succeeding in picking up the info screen at 7 pm that says "BBC4 starts at 7 pm". But thereafter it continues to record that info screen and not the programme. It will, however, record the sound and occasionally it will pick up part of the video as a strip obscured by part of the info screen. If, as the screen says, you tune away and back again, it sorts itself out. But by the nature of video recording, you aren't there to read that or respond! If I try to record later, starting from another channel, it's fine, but not a) starting from the DVD tuned to BBC4 or b) staring at 7 pm. For some reason, the BBC transmit a programme on the guide called "this is BBC4" up to 18:58 and another one 2 minutes long to bring us up to 19:00. I don't know why this is but recording or omitting the 2 minutes makes no difference.
I see this as a fault to do with what seems to me to be a fundamental difference in the type of transmission data stream that provides the info screen and the main programme that somehow is not correctly sent to or correctly interpreted by the DVD. Hence, I think this is for another forum.

Re: Digital TV reception from the Midhurst Transmitter
By the way I am a retired electronics engineer so I am familiar with technical terms.
I have two Technosonic PVR 101 Freeview hard disc recorders and at my location in Haslemere receive a signal from the Midhurst transmitter that is nearly 100% in strength and Very Good in quality.
I realise that these were cheap and sometimes infuriating machines, but up until recently have behaved adequately. However over the last month or two some strange things have been happening.
Most days some channels are missing, usually 1 to 9 on Multiplexes 55 and 56. Other days just channels 3 and 4, (ITV1 and Channel 4 and possibly others) on Multiplex 56 are missing. Sometimes Multiplex 59 suffers the same problem. They can be recovered by performing a manual retune of Multiplexes 55, 56, 59 and the pictures can be received OK but bizarrely often the ITV1 and Channel 4 programmes cannot be recorded either manually or by the timer. Other programmes like BBC1, BBC2, and Quest etc. can be recorded without a problem. Very weird.
I have tried the following:
First Time Installation set-up without an aerial connected then with the aerial connected
Auto Tune without an aerial connected then with the aerial connected
Cleared all channels and carried out manual tuning
Unfortunately none of the operations have cured the problem and I have to manually tune once or even twice a day!
I am wondering if additional new information (e.g. some form of Meta Data) is being transmitted these days which my old receiver is unable to process and causing confusion. Before I consign them to the spares pile I would be grateful if you could throw some light on this matter.
Regards,
Mr Stuart Ponsford

I get a very stable signal from Midhurst its a shame I can only get half the channels tho :-( back per dso I could get, midhusrt hannington rowridge & crystal palace! progress hey.

Channels just disappear. Sometimes fine, but then go. Particularly noticeable when trying to watch BBC Breakfast. Very rarely get it, but can ofter watch BBC later in the day. It is almost as though BBCA and BBCB have had the power reduced overnight, and then turned back up sometime after 07:00.
Sometimes do not get any channels that can be watched without breakup, other times channels are fine. On a couple of occasions, when a channel has gone, I have checked the reported signal strength and it is down to 30% with quality of 100%, other times quality of 60%.

further to earlier email. Forgot to mention location of aerial. It is on a post rising from high on the side wall of the house.
Real problems started a couple of years ago and we have had to go to freesat for main tv but wish to retain freeview for non-freesat channels.
Basically, it works sometimes, but not all times.

With the Midhurst Transmitter and where I receive from why do COM4, COM5 and COM6 mux's operate at a lower wattage output compared to the other mux's? We can receive all channels just fine but when it is raining we can loose channels on the lower output and sometimes the HD mux as well.
