The symbol shows the location of the Mendip (Somerset, England) transmitter which serves 720,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Mendip (Somerset, England) mast?

Chris.SE: Hi Chris,
I need two channels for multiplexing in the Appleby Guise area (Sandy Heath). I know channel 34 is good. Can I safely use channel 39 please? If not what channel would you recommend please?

Derek Marsh:

You really should have asked this on the Sandy Heath board Sandy Heath (Central Bedfordshire, England) Full Freeview transmitter | free and easy
34 is currently free as is 39, but note SDN/COM4 moves to C33 in 2020.
You can check channel usage on Digital UK - Coverage checker and put in your postcode which will show you what transmitters you can receive and their current channels.
I would try to use channels above C56 unless there's a good reason why you cannot (eg. a strong local mobile phone mast using those frequencies).

Current Mendip transmissions seem to be different from your listing. I see no Ch32 but I see 23, 26, 33,35, 36, 48,49, 52, 54, and 58.. I assume 23 and 26 are Stockland but if all the rest are Mendip, is any update as to which Muxs are on which channels available?
Many thanks,
Mick

Mick:

Go to the Digital UK Coverage Checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker put in your full post code, select the Detailed view and hit Go. Then scroll down the reluting listing to see all the channels used for the multiplexes.

The owner of this website has been away for some time but has not yet had chance to bring all the entries for over 1100 transmitters up to date. The website I'm suggesting is run by the transmitter operators.

After a deal of searching I have determined the following which may be of interest.

According to DigitalUK the retune dates in 2019 for Mendip TX 700MHz clearance are:

April 4th: BBC-A goes from UHF Ch 49 to Ch 32;

June 5th: BBC-B (HD) goes from 58 to 35; Com-8 from Ch 35 to 56; D3+4 from 54 to 34;

June 19th: Com-7 goes from to Ch 36 to 55; Arq-B goes from 52 to 36; LOC goes from 51 to 30.

SDN remains on Ch 48 (690 MHz), and Arq-A on Ch 33, throughout.

Com-7 and Com-8 will subsequently cease by Q1/2020.

Arch A:

Thee have been available on the Digital UK website for some time. All you need do is go to Digital UK - Coverage checker put in a post code, select Detailed View and click on Go. Then scroll down to the listings. That will show the current channels used plus when there will be changes and what channels will be used then.

That's one of the main sources of information we contributors use extensively.

This website page for the Mendip Tx lists Mux BBCA on ch 32. Yet Arch A's post and the Digital UK TV site show it still on ch 49 (which is what I receive it on) and the change to ch 32 not for some months ahead. Can the Mendip page be updated please as it caused me some confusion last time I did a manual retune on my Humax PVR.
Thanks
Chris

Arch A: & Chris Dale:

As has been mentioned previously by posters on this site, the website owner has had other commitments and has not been able to keep all aspects of the site up-to-date.

For current channel & mux information etc I'll repeat part of my post made on 6th March 2018 (p171) -

For those wanting to do a manual retune, the UHF channels are as follows -
UHF33 (ArqA-COM5), UHF48 (SDN-COM4), UHF49 (BBCA-PSB1), UHF51 (LBS) reception depends on location, UHF52 (ArqB-COM6), UHF54 (D3&4-PSB2). For those with HD tuners - include the following - UHF35 (COM8), UHF36 (COM7) and UHF58 (BBCB-PSB3).

For those wanting a list of Digital changes at Mendip, consult Freeview UK at Coverage Checker - Detailed View
To check reception at your own location, click on Change Address just below the big pink menu bar and then enter your postcode, make sure you have Detailed View ticked.

A list of current Freeview channels can be seen here - Digital UK | Channel listings
Planned Engineering work can be seen here - Digital UK | Planned engineering works

Note - There is planned engineering at Mendip this week with possible service interruptions.

I expect there will be a belated Transmitter Engineering post to advise that all muxes other than COMs 7&8 and LBS went off-air shortly after midnight.

As a member of the public, it was very annoying last night to suddenly find the programme I was watching just interrupted and advised that I had no channels. It would have been so much better if a message could have been put up stating that there was maintenance work going on on the Mendip transmitter. We spent too long trying to retune several TV's when it was not necessary. Blasted annoying and not keeping Joe Public advised
