Rich: Although you mention that the box is Freeview+ model are you sure that its capable of HD reception? as Sagem makes both types, any doubts please give the model number involved.

The other point is, that although you say you are on the Gloucestershire network, where exactly? (pref: post code) as that would enable your reception possibilities to be checked on just in case HD is not as yet being transmitted in your area.

Rich: Just to say that without knowledge of your post code, if as it appears you are using Ridge Hill then there is no reason you should not be getting HD, that is unless as aforementioned your box is not capable of receiving it, verified by not seeing programme channel numbers 50 - 54 shown in the EPG list.

Have a look at the boxes specifications in your user manual, and if in the tuner section you only see DVB-T mentioned than its not an HD model, HD being DVB-T2.

I mostly have no or bad signal on Ridge Hill Ch27 on my Humax Freeview recorder.(Film 4, ITV4). I always have good reception on other channels and no problems on the TV itself. Connections are high-grade SCART. I had no problems before digital switchover. Aerial is in loft. I have received digital via the Humax PVR8000T for about 6 years.

Mike Barrett: Loft aerials are often a problem for reliable reception - but please see Single frequency interference | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

I note you can receive signals from Ridge Hill, Mendip, Malvern, Sutton Coldfield, The Wrekin and Bromsgrove, so you should be able to get a signal for the ArqB multiplex.

Sound volume is much lower on the HD channels than the normal channels, requiring increased amplification. What is the reason for this?

Hi guys! I am an aerial installer and have come across a few problems in the last few days with reception from Ridge Hill. 3 weeks ago I installed a log periodic aerial on a property with a short mast and had perfect signals. The customer rang me a few days ago and said that between 11am and 8pm they had lost a majority of their channels (BBC especially). So I go back and lo and behold the signals had dropped off.
So first thing was to change the aerial and replace the mast for a longer one, signals still the same (UHF 21 and 24 being bad however 28 was perfect).
Added a masthead amplifier to increase strength on 21 and 24 which helped.
Customer has called again today to say she has lost channels again (Dave, Really, E4+1, Challenge, Sky news Food network in particular)
Now I have checked the transmitter as has the customer and there are no problems there!
I have had a second customer now who has had exactly the same problem!! Same transmitter but in a different area. It definitely feels like something is going on somewhere!
Thanks in advance guys

Andy

Richard: I am an aerial installer from gloucestershire and we were getting odd problems just recently. I installed a new aerial 4 weeks ago it was working perfectly then all of a sudden some channels would go then all channels, usually at night! I believe that there was a problem with high pressure causing an inversion effect. That should have passed by now though.
Are you still having the same problems?

Mike Barrett: The HD channels do not use the "make everything as loud as possible" audio compression system used on the SD channels. This provides for a more subtle listening experiences, as well as 5.1 surround-sound.

Andrew: Could be co-channel interference. Other transmitters using those channels are Rowridge, Blaen-Plwyf, and Caradon Hill. As it sounds like a "recent" problem, Rowridge would seem to be the most likely culprit, and even though the log period aerial has a good front-back ratio, it can still pick up reflected signals from buildings in front of the aerial (especially if they have big sheets of Celotex in the walls).
Typical readings on your meter would show plenty of received power (from Ridge Hill without amplifier) but low quality.
The high pressure weather may also be a factor.
