maryam,
Yes, I think getting a proper digital aerial will solve your problem, (if the professional who fits it is worth his salt, then he should also be able to help in obtaining the channels for you as a matter of course).
Good luck and regards
JC

JC:
There's no such thing as a 'digital' aerial, see the BBC website for a discussion about UHF aerials and elsewhere on this site. Try BBC - Help receiving TV and radio - aerials for digital terrestrial TV or http://www.bbc.co.uk/rece….pdf for useful information.
A good UHF aerial of either Yagi, modified Yagi or wideband design will be suitable for any DTV reception. The nature of the modulation content has NO effect on the transmission, propagation and reception of the carrier signal. It is the reception aspect that is done by the aerial. The decoding of the signal is done by the television or STB.

Could someone please help me with my TV signal? Ever since the changes in April my reception has been affected, for a while it was ok but recently I have lost signal for all channels on ch49 and ch50. I am in SK8, have a Toshiba tv with integrated freeview and am wondering if there is anything I can do to sort the problem? I have tried resetting the tv and retuning it but that does not improve the signal, the channels are there just have poor signal. Any help would be most appreciated.

maryam: If you are receiving Freeview from the Winter Hill transmitter located at approximately 17 miles away, then I very much doubt if you would be able to receive anything using an indoor (set top) aerial.
What type of aerial are you presently using?

jb38: Oh ok, thanks for that. it's a Yagi aerial I think. Signal has got better today on C59 but still not BBC channels at all (C49).

maryam: As the signal path between Winter Hill and your location is indicating a clear line-of-sight which in theory should result in you having good reception, but to eliminate the possibility that your problem is being caused by the current wave of high pressure that is affecting reception for numerous viewers across parts of the country, it would really be prudent to make one or two local enquiries (neighbours etc) for the purpose of ascertaining as to whether or not others are also experiencing similar problems with reception from Winter Hill.
Further advice dependant on findings, although it would be of assistance if the model number of the TV involved was known, plus whether or not you are using a booster?

jb38: Oh would that be all the 4G signal I've been hearing about? Can get everyother channel apart from BBC Channels (and really BBC is all I watch) So it's quite annoying. My Tv is 22' Bush with built in freeview (Orginally bought from Argos. I don't have a booster and model number is btvd91216b
Thanks for all you're help so far.

I wrote the following a couple of weeks ago...
""I have exactly the same problem as Stephen
(Tuesday 2 July 2013 11:48PM, on the same channels and with approximately the same reception values (also sourced from a Humax HDR-FOX T2), it is also on all the reception devices (4xTV, 1xHumax PVR & 1xDTV USB stick for laptop reception)
The only difference is that I live in north Manchester. The aerial is pointing in the direction of Winter Hill and is not obscured in any way as I live on top of a hill.""
The problem is now resolved.
I recently received an 800MHz filter free of charge from 'at800' as my area is possibly going to be affected by the new 4G signals. I had to fit the filter in the loft where the TV signal amplifier/distributor is sited. I have not touched it for years and the input plug was very heavily oxidised (as were the output plugs - they are all good quality aluminium plugs)and the plug was difficult to remove. When I finally removed the plug I decided to renew it and also to renew two of the output plugs and to clean the rest of them that were in reasonable condition.
I now have good reception on all channels, although channel 49 is still showing a much lower signal level compared to all the other channels - low 30% for ch49, compared to high 50% for the rest.

ATV aerial of Sheffield(/www.aerialsandtv.com) sell brass plugs to solve that problem, might be worth getting some. I also wonder if the pc tracks inside your aerial amp are also corroded as in South Trafford I get levels of around 77% from a loft aerial on a Humax Fox T2. Although 30% sounds much lower than 50% you must remember that the signal strength meters on domestic devices aren't very linear so it may be telling you that levels in general are rather poor. Try bypassing the amp and feed the aerial directly to the cable feeding the Humax and see if the signal rises, if it is better the amp is faulty, if it gets worse I'm afraid you may have an aerial problem.
