About 16 months ago purchased a Sony DVD recorder. About 3 years ago had new aerial installed on my chimmney stack. Annalogue reception good, digital reception thru DVD recorder has become appalling, impossible to see picture accompanied by loud screeches. Sony (via DVD supplier) state not their problem, Supplier wont change DVD recorder to one that will work with poor signal. Now "up a gum tree" what do i do?

Hi

I have had a Panasonic HDTV recorder that up until 10 days ago received HDTV ok (albeit with a low signal). I have now lost all HDTV. Is there a problem/work with Crystal Palace. I live in Leatherhead and know that it is a bit "iffy" here.

graham campbell: Well what both Sony and the DVD supplier have said is quite correct, as they aren't responsible for you receiving a poor signal, this aspect of reception possibilities unable to be checked on as you havent mentioned where you are located (pref:post code) nor anything about your aerial being used, such as loft or roof mounted, or maybe even on a communal system.

graham campbell: Apologies, just noticed that you did state that your aerial was on the chimney, if you indicate your location the signal expected at your location can then be checked on.

Andy Hagerty: As it says above, there are no problems with the transmitter. I would have a look at Freeview reception has changed? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

HP15 6NN. High Wycombe. Please can you email me an explanation? (As I am nearly 80 I cannot understand complicated instructions.) I had a new digibox installed on Wednesday, using the very helpful & efficient BBC Switchover Help Scheme. The engineer said I had a poor signal from my aerial (best available 10 years ago & I have had no previous problems.) He put up a new aerial facing exactly the same direction as my old one (however not the same as all my neighbours.) He could not remove the old aerial as his ladder was not long enough. I have 2 sets & now use my bedroom TV mostly. After he left I was unable to get the digibox to work. My other TV (app. 18 months old) was still OK. But after teething problems, & re-tuning it via the Help number, it worked spasmodically, but I could not get all channels all the time.
Today is a different story - my bedroom TV has "no signal" & broken-up picture with bad static & will not change channels. The sitting-room TV is now also affected in the same way, but at 5pm I can get some freeview channels.
(Apologies for this long explanation.) Is there a problem at Crystal Palace? Do I just have to accept that from now on, I am unlikely to get a proper service until next April? If the Switchover Engineer returns to try to sort me out, I have to accept what I am told (i.e. I live in the wrong area!) If there are no problems at your end, do you think it is the aerial being sited incorrectly? Thank you very much, in anticipation of a reply. Claire Evans

MRS CLAIRE EVANS: You are predicted to have, and to continue to have a perfect reception from the Crystal Palace transmitter.

Given you have been provided this service by the Digital Help Scheme, I would get onto their complaints people and demand that they come and sort it out for you.

You live in a very good signal area and there should be no problems with a competent installer providing your with a stable, working installation.

Switchover will not make much difference to your reception, the problems can be sorted out right now.

Hello,
Up till today I have been receiving a weak but usable Freeview HD signal. I note that there was engineering work on the Crystal Palace transmitter but that is showing as completed. Now I can't get the Freeview HD channels any more on my STB nor on another device I use. I've tried retuning automatically and doing a manual retune on channel 31 but nothing is showing up. All other channels (SD) are showing the same signal strength as yesterday. Any ideas? Has something changed due to the engineering work I wonder. I know the HD signal is weak and I'm on the edge of the signal.

I have the same problem as Robin Laskey, have been receiving HD channels on channel 31 (Crystal Palace) for some time now, but yesterday (August 31st) they stopped working and I cannot re-tune them. Please could someone confirm why this is and if I can expect to get them again soon (i.e. before the switch over for Crystal Palace next year) - is there ongoing engineering work ?

I have the same problem as Robert Laskey.
I believe it is due to the COM channel on Sandy Heath moving to channel 31 on 31 August. It will be 18th April 2012 before we get HD back unless there is a change of plan. I belive they have underestimated the area where Crystal Palace is in use, rather than Sandy Heath. It means a large area to the North West of London (but still in the home counties) will be without HD fo 6 months, that's progress.
