Big Mart. Satellite cable is double screened inside, it has a copper foil screen under the outter PVC insulation then under the copper foil is the copper braid then the centre solid copper wire also insulated, in practice most places will sell the higher quality cable now, Maplin only sell the higher spec cable ( although not the cheapest place to buy it). What I mean by high quality aerial plugs is metal ones, there are a few types of plugs out there that have.a plastic casing I personally would avoid these.

Tim: I am really wondering if it is worth it all. As I said I can pick up all other Freeview channels through my DR. If I really want to record a programme from the terrestrial stations I can use the standard channels (1,2,3 etc.) rather than the HDs.
I was just hoping somebody maybe able to give me a quick fix.

I understand how you feel, digital signals can a pain in the ar#@ sometimes. Analogue signals could at least be watched with a bit of interference but with digital its all or nothing.. I feel frustrated on your behalf, digital is great 99.9% of the time but if you have an untrackable fault then its a different story.

Big Mart: On reading some of your back postings regarding your problem I cant say that I have actually noticed you having mentioned what the signal strength / quality is indicated at on your HD recorder, so a check should be made on this when all seems OK then again when the problems are occurring, or even if the picture vanishes altogether, as the signal will still likely be there but sitting at just under the reception threshold of the recorders tuner, and maybe you could also indicate the model number of the device in question.
Regarding the cable and plugs used, a good quality coax plug in basic terms means one NOT made of aluminium but nickel plated brass, and if you do not have a soldering iron then choose the types that use a grub screw to hold the cables solid inner core onto the plugs centre connector.
As far as cable is concerned, satellite cable cannot always be automatically classed as being better over a normal quality coax, albeit that it was a few years ago when satellite reception first started, but since then inferior grades can be found on sale in various outlets and so look for cable with markings on the outer cover such as WF100 or PF100 which can also be obtained in white if required.
That said though, normal coax thats over 6.5mm in diameter is usually always OK for what you require, but have a look at the end of the roll to make sure that you see copper braiding, as although satellite grade of the type mentioned is good its not very flexible, and thats not always the best thing where jumper leads are involved.

Just to confirm jb38's posting above. I've re-cabled all my runs in WF100 and the improvement exceeded my expectations. The signal loss is hardly noticeable over runs of 20m+. I did have the aluminium braid prior to this and would never go back. I purchased a drum of WF100 from 'a well known internet auction site' but it's worth shopping around as prices vary considerably. The only down side I've encountered is that it's a bit stiff so tight bends should be avoided.

Hi all
Located at BR5 near Orpington
I still can't get ArqA from CP on C22 at all, however, I'm getting a "weak" (<10%)signal on C42 which is "fair" to "good" quality on my Sony HDD/DVD recorder which decodes well - so where's that coming from ?
Also, I'm getting a strong C44 signal, but the recorder won't decode it.
It has been suggested, by an Arqiva Senior Engineer, that I may have water in the aerial or downlead causing loss pf one channel (C22) whilst the others are at normal strength and quality. Anyone come across this ?

jb38: Sorry for the delay in coming back to you. I took the following readings this morning.
BBC News Signal 74% Quality 100%
Yesterday 46% / 100%
BBC1 HD 14% 0% - 44% (varying).
I have already determined that I am picking the signal up from the correct Crystal Palace transmitter.
I have yet to check my cables, but I think one is a white plastic cable with moulded plugs at each end.
My recorder is Sony SVR-HDT500 Freeview+ HD

jb38: The plug coming from the socket in the wall to the Recorder is thick brown cable with a silver coax plug at each end. Both ends are screwed in tightly and I can just see a bit of inner core wire in the middle hole.
The ones out from Recorder to the television is white plastic, and plus are moulded on. No inner core is visible.

Right JB the latest news from uk digital that i have is that you should now find all is well from the CRYSTAL PALACE transmitter
I can confirm that people like me on the very edge of receiving a signal from the CRYSTAL PALACE transmitter and that providing you have a good set up like i have you will be pleased to know that you will be getting 100% for signal quality and 100% for strength across all TV channels in other words you will have a full rock steady house
Well that's what I'm now getting and at the end of day i just had to sit tight and just do another rescan
so if you are still getting a problem you must do another rescan as the power is there and also the quality providing you have got a good set up

NICK ADSL UK: Just rescanned my DR. Still the same problem with the HD channels breaking up (it is like a tear across the screen for approx 1 - 2 seconds every few seconds).
