The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Tim: noticed all stations on channel 23 were poor last night (unwatchable) so it may well have been conditions.

Roll on next October.

Details of the new RTE mini Mux have been apparently announced yeasterday.

Black Mountain at 2/1kw, Brougher at 1KW, and Carbmoney Hill at 16w.

So, no Divis then, but at least Black Mountain is at a higher power.

Hi.My sister lives in Glengormley and on my next visit"across the water" I'd like to fix up Freeview for her. Can somebody tell me if this is possible, and,in which direction I should point the Yagga? aerial please. Also, how many Freeview channels would she receive, and will this number increase following full switchover in 2012, Thanks a lot.

Jack McKnight: In order to get the full set of commercial channels, your sister's aerial will need to point at Divis. Whether reception from Divis is possible at her location is another matter and a post code might help get an idea.

It is also worth looking to see what the neighbours have (types of aerials and their direction). Google Streetview might help with that.

The main relay in Glengormley is Carnmoney Hill and post-switchover this will be a Freeview Light transmitter, meaning that it won't broadcast the commercial multiplexes.

Here's what mb21 says about the reason for Carnmoney Hill:
mb21 - The Transmission Gallery
"Carnmoney Hill was built due to what I've named the bowl effect. Newtownabbey is shielded from Divis by Cavehill, a rock outcrop in North Belfast - like a cereal bowl with a hill in the middle. Newtownabbey is sandwiched in the valley below and can't receive Divis."

If your sister can't receive from Divis and she already has an aerial on Carnmoney, then I suggest that that will be the best that she can get on Freeview and therefore that no replacement aerial will be needed.

If you are looking at DIYing, then I recommend you have a look at ATV Sheffield's website for lots of information on this subject: www.aerialsandtv.com

She might be better goung for Freesat if she can't get Divis post DSO Jack.

As Dave says, have a look around and see where all the other antennas are pointing. The ones that are vertically polarised will be Carnmoney Hill. Those with horizontal polarisation will be Divis.

You may well find some very large aerials on older houses pointing towrds Divis, with newer developments using Carnmoney Hill (Catnmoney Hill only came on air in the 1980s)

Incidentally, if she has an aerial pointing towards Carnmoney Hill, it might be a good idea to keep this as the site will carry the new RTE mini multiplex post DSO i.e. RTE1, RTE2, and TG4 (along with a possible fourth TV channel and radio station).

RTE isn't vailable on Freesat.
