The symbol shows the location of the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) transmitter which serves 4,490,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) mast?

Janice: There has to be something else involved, as there is no such thing as digital or analogue distribution amplifiers, as they amplify anything.

Hi JB38
Tried the bit of wire and screen freezes with
no signal message.
Interestingly enough the frozen picture still
has the interfence and hum on it.
Been watching it and noticed that even with sound muted the hum is still there on the picture. The hum is loudest on a full white screen and practically dissapears on a red screen. The picture interference looks like
the heat haze you get on hot days and seems worse when there are a lot of vertical colour
changes and dissapears on something like a long range landscape picture.Shame they don't
still transmit the test card.
The TV is a 14" Bush CRT says AK46 on the back (I still think that a CRT tube gives a
far superior picture compared to LCD)
Just popped into ASDA on the way home and they'd sold out off most of their Freeview TVs guess no-one told them about the switchover:)

Got a strange problem here.

Since the 18th my PVR is not picking up anything on UHF28 (Arq B, Mux D, whatever you want to call it!). My fairly new Samsung TV picks it up no problem though, and they're connected in-line.

The box is an old Asda one, the Durabrand DPVR801. I'm 7km from Crystal Palace (bearing 126°) and am using a set top aerial.

I used to need a powered amplifier to get a good signal on all channels. I tried removing it from the setup to see if it made a difference, but no luck.

All other channels seem to be fine, but when I do a manual scan on 28 it just shows nothing at all.

Like I said before, the aerial lead goes through the PVR into the TV and the TV picks the channels up fine.

Anyone got any ideas? I can watch the channels on the TV, but there are occasions where I like to record things on ITV4, so would prefer to get this fixed if possible!

Many thanks.

ok jb38 - yes I'm asking lots of questions, as you are, out of curiosity. I expect you are right re 'just get a freeview box.' Interested to learn about the whys and why nots on my Philips model. On the updates, I DO have a serial port (9 pin like mouse type on a compo) and a common interface slot - both at the rear, along with the modem previously mentioned. Not much about how to/why to/when to use any of these, or what they are for in the manual! Re model info rear stickers read :-

TV updates are mainly to do with apps like bbc i player they have nothing whatsoever to do with the changeover or loss of signal

David How: I was just having a read at your posting and wondered exactly what you are using for an aerial? as anything used in Dulwich that has more efficiency than a simple set top aerial is liable to cause a multitude of problems through signal overloading, and with any indications seen as far as the strength or quality is concerned being totally inaccurate as the tuner will be verging on instability thereby giving incorrect indications.

Big Mart: Where signals from more than one transmitter are picked up by the aerial, different pieces of equipment can decide to go with different transmitters.

Go to BBC One HD and then bring up the signal strength screen. For Crystal Palace the UHF channel used for HD services is C30.

According to Digital UK Tradeview predictor you may be able to pick up Sandy Heath (C21), Hannington (C39) or perhaps Hemel Hempstead (C47).

David Taylor: Going by your latest report regarding the symptoms seen on the TV makes it rather obvious that something in your system is causing severe instability to occur, are you positive that the scart lead between the box and the TV is OK? what to do is wiggle each of the two scart sockets in turn whilst observing the interference, as if the main earth has come off inside the scart plug (or TV's socket) that can cause problems.

The other point is that this model of TV is made by Vestel (Turkey) and is notorious for bad joints in various places, so do you have any other devices in the house that you can connect into the TV's scart socket to verify that its OK?

martyh: Thanks for that info, and which I have copied down and will have a check on early next Monday or Tuesday depending on what my non-domestic electronics work schedule might dictate.

The other point about your problem being, that even if Philips (or any other company) customer services puts you through to the technical service side of the help line even they don't get involved with the nitty-gritty of in-depth fault finding and are inclined to believe what they see printed in an info sheet given to them is the gospel, which in many cases it isn't.

Anyway I will get back on this.

martyh: Just to reinforce a point, it does all hinge on the "05" issue, because as you know that model of TV is on more than one list as not being able to operate on an 8k transmission mode.
