PaulN :
It has been pretty much standard practice with small transformers of the type used in such power units to have a small safety cut-out fuse included, mounted so that any excess heat in the windings causes it to fail safe. Such heat would normally be the result of a fault either in the windings themselves or the secondary side components. A correct repair would be to replace the transformer if available and you are competent at such repairs, remembering that you are dealing with mains voltages (230 Volts). Replacing the whole power unit as perhaps a better, safer alternative, but make sure you use the correct unit to maintain safety of all equipment connected.

I found it much easier and cheaper to replace the entire power supply with an external AC/DC converter. The labgear unit has a nice convenient flying lead where I was able to splice on a connector for the external converter. Cost me like 4 quid plus some scraps of wire and connectors I had about the place. Oh and I replaced the labgear power led with a 12V version for convenience. The new converter has a 1A rating while the old transformer was stickered for 400mA at 12V so I have plenty of headroom.

I may yet investigate the old transformer for the thermal fuse but I have a good result with a cheap, safe repair.

PaulN: As far as the old transformer is concerned its not really worthwhile replacing the thermal fuse anyway as its not really known for sure what caused it to fail in the first place, as although its not exactly unknown for a T/ fuse to fail as simply "one of those things" and with replacement of same bringing the amp back into life, but though on the other hand the overheating "might" have been due to the transformers primary having developed a partial short across a few of the windings thereby over-volting the remainder and causing excessive current to be drawn, and so if the fuse had simply been replaced you might possibly have found that the problem re-occurred after an hour or so when the transformer reached the point where the heat once again resulted in the fuse to failing.

Hi Pauric!

You have indicated that you have lost both Channel 23 and Channel26 a few weeks ago. Have you manually rescanned both these channels? I know that was recent work being undertaken at the Divis Transmitter but no major changes have taken place at that time. The stations that you are looking for in a rescan are as follows:

COM4/SDN on Channel 23
10 ITV 3,
20 Drama,
25 Dave ja vu,
27 ITV 2 +1,
30 5*,
31 5USA,
38 Quest,
39 The Zone,
44 Channel 5 +1,
55 5 Later,
61 True Entertainment,
63 ITV 3 +1,
72 CITV,
16 QVC,
23 Bid,
49 The Jewellery Channel.
There is also a number of Adult, Digital Radio and Text channels transmitted on this UHF channel.

COM5/ArqA on Channel 26
11 pick,
12 Dave,
17 Really,
29 E4+1,
32 Movie Mix,
41 Food Network,
42 Travel Channel,
46 Challenge,
82 Sky News,
87 Community Channel,
36 Create and Craft,
37 Price Drop TV,
43 Gems TV 1.
There is also a number of Adult, Digital Radio and Text channels transmitted on this UHF channel.

I hope you get your missing stations back with rescanning the two channels.

Hi, on Saturday evening I was experiencing major interference on UTV and a few other channels, by Sunday evening it was major interference or no signal on all channels. I did a full rescan and lost all channels, my tv could not pick up signal from any. Since then I have periodically manually and autoscanned and have managed to recover most of my channels except for channel 21 which includes UTV, Channel 5, ITV2 etc. Is this just a result of recent engineering and could I expect to recover these channels if I continue manually searching for channels on channel 21?
I'm in BT38 area.

If your Divis aerial is diplexed with an RTE aerial just make sure you're not picking up Carnmoney Hill off the side of the beam Samantha. Have a look in the 800's just to see if UTV etc. is there.

This does happen on an initial scan on some of my boxes (even though Divis is the stronger signal) and if you're experiencing this (Carnmoney Hill would be fairly weak in your area) you may have to do a manual scan to restore the channels such as UTV etc.

I did check the 800s and nothing there, I've never recieved RTE either so I don't think that's it. When I try to manually scan channel 21 the little box says no signal and the signal meter (good, normal, bad are the increments) is completely blank. Thanks for your reply though :)

Well Kieran Ward, after further manually rescanning Ch 23 and Ch26 it still could not recognised these channels, it looks as though it could be interference with other Tv or mobile masts. Could it be my amplifier is too high !. I probably will get a aerial person to look at it.
